The ECU has detected a fault and put your engine into safe mode. Normally its a sensor like the Air Mass Sensor that fails and needs replacing. These problems can appear random or happen every time but you need to know what it thinks is the problem. You need someone to read the fault codes from the ECU and take it from there. Take it to your dealer or local indie and have them plug it in.

Not sure. On the C, E etc they are very simple. Just a plastic box on the air inlet pipe. Prices range from £70 to £250 but fitting is a simple 5 min diy job. However the A may be substantially different. See this link

The first thing is to get the diagnostic done as it may be something else. A dealer will charge you around £70-90 for this, an indie less.

On a diesel, things like a leaking turbo pipe or dodgy transducer can also cause this fault though the MAS is probably the most common.

Once you have the fault, you can consider your options.
If you post your location, someone should be able to direct you to a reputable local indie who has the necessary diagnostic kit and experience.

As you'll see from the link, most expensive parts can be repaired for a fraction of the replacement cost as 99% of it will last forever and the 1 weak component is normally easily replaced. Oddly, the dealer won't mention this!
