Why the older bulbs ?

The Unlimited and Laser didn't place too well in the AE previous H7 test .

1. Philips RacingVision
2. Ring Xenon130
3. GE Megalight Ultra +130
4. Bosch Gigalight Plus 120
5. Osram Night Breaker Unlimited
6. Philips X-tremeVision +130
7. Twenty20 daylight120
8. Osram Night Breaker Laser
9. M-tech Powertec Platinum

Iirc the evolution of the Night Breakers has been,

Plus +90
Unlimited +110
Laser +130
Laser Next Generation +150

No, it’s been (as H7):

Plus 1200lm/ 250hrs
Unlimited 1500lm/150hrs
Laser (all types) 1500lm/ 150hrs

This is what most lamp manufacturers don’t publish. Actual fact and data. Brightness in empirical units, not some waffle plus percentage.

There's a lot of marketing in everything , always great when it's exposed .

Quite. Plus, it shows how poorly the AE tests are conducted. There are no controls in place and the tests are subjective.

For comparison, Philips Racing Vision now states 1500lm/ 200hrs @3500K on their datasheet. That’s improved on 2 years ago when they were at 1400lm.

4571B7C5-BE3A-4BA3-8F72-7A875B47A073.png Now here’s something else... this is from what Ring call a spec sheet (there’s precious little data on it!) and it’s taken from the AE tests. Let’s apply some laws of physics, and we all know what the USS ENTERPRISE’s chief engineering officer says about them!

Apparent lighting intensity is an inverse r^2 relationship with distance. So to achieve 50% greater lighting effect at the same distance requires a 4x increase in the lighting output. Similarly to achieve a 75% increase in beam range requires an 8x increase. The same kind of range increase one sees going from 110 to 190m for example.

So, as power input is fixed by the car at 55W, and the fundamental technology (filament lamp) hasn’t changed... I just don’t believe them.

I've been quite happy with their other product tests and bought their winners .

With the newer cars ( Xenon & LED ) these discussions will fade , the only lights I had to update were the HALOGEN reversing bulbs , now they're headlights !

Another useless halogen is 5W 501 / T10 / W5W front sidelights , dangerous , a quick look at a junction at a certain angle and the dull gloworms could be mistaken for an orange indicator !

I used to get bigger wedge fit 921 bulbs 21W if compatible .

Now non Cree led are superior but of course illegal o_O

Did you notice any heat difference between 5w and 21w ?

I just bought Osram Nightbreaker Unlimiteds for dipped beam, but can't fit 'em myself. (Incy dentally - these have been discontinued for quite a time now.)
My local indi will do it, so I thought I may as well get a full kit whilst he's at it.

What's best for MAIN beam ?
What's the best for sidelights - hence my reply to Gaz ?

There are many versions of Nightbreaker. The early ones may well be discontinued but the later ones are still very much in supply.
Ultimates and Laser are both current.

Not alot , but a difference with 5W Vs 21W .

Just to confuse there is one Ultimate and two Lazer versions .

Where they are going to go from here is? as the technology is maxed out .

New cars are all going LED. That’s where the tech is going.

I was referring to the impossible further development of +160/ 170% incandescent halogen Xenon gas filled bulbs .

And they are only being fitted to aftermarket sales now. They will go the way of VHS...
