Hi

I am looking to purchase an w-140 s-class in the near future and need some tips on what to look out for.

I am looking for either a 420 or 500.

I understand that these cars are supposedly very strong in some areas but that servicing and parts can be expensive.

any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

electrics electrics electrics...

air con- make sure it works - innocently ask if the system has been charged lately - repairs cam be scary. difficult to check in this weather - look on the us merc forums for how to check the air con computer (mercedesshopforum or somthing)

tyre wear - make sure its reasonably even. it will pull very slightly to the left - but tracking (geo checks) are 250 quid....

loose drivers seat, wear in the tracks common.

hammer it for a good few miles - really hammer it. then leave to idle. see if it idles smoothly. (mine doesnt - dont know why)

chips in headlights etc... but thats obvious. ;)
