hey there,

ive got a 1985 2.3 16v that when i drive with the windows down, the smell of gasoline is unbearable. when the windows are up, it doesnt smell. the car also has a problem starting. a friend of mine told me it is probably my mass air flow sensor. he said it is probably bad, and that my (circular disk thingy in my air intake) needs adjusting with somekind of meter gun. does this make sense with what ive mentioned?? i need to get this 16v to pass smog next month, and i need to fix this gas smell problem. im pretty sure its not a gas leak, ive never noticed any gas coming from anywhere when ive got the hood up. also, my fuel pump makes a buzz sound constantly... im not sure if this one thing has got to do with the other...

thanks!

I'd start with the normal diagnostics, what's the O2 reading, are the plugs black, is the MPG poor etc etc. Yes, the 'circular disk thingy' and MAF may well be playing a part, but so could weak plug leads, dodgy plugs or a clogged air filter.
Basically it needs a proper tune up/service, so my advice is find a reputable specialist and let them play with it.

Hi bella, You do not have MAF on your car, as such, the petrol smell could be in the fuel return system, or the charcoal canister leaking rusty or worn out.
If the car drives perfectly, it is in the return to tank part of the system.
