Hi Barry,

Welcome to the forum.

Cannot say I've ever seen an E60 W124. What engine does it have. Where have you seen it?

Ps: Have put your two posts together here in the general section.

I am very vague on this, but I think the E60 was an AMG or Brabus enhancement, of the E500, if its a W124. Or, its a tuned W210. Does the car have rectangular headlamps or round ones? Chassis number?

I imagine it would be practical enough in use, but servicing items would be costly (eg brakes) and some of the more specialised parts may be no longer available. It could be something which prevents the car running again, which means you're into searching specialist companies (probably in Germany) for bits to get your car running again - just like an older classic car.

Also, I'd imagine the fuel consumption won't be too clever.

Thanks guys , sorry about the two posts - firsts time on this forum still getting the hang of it . The E60 was indeed an AMG enhancement , I am sure it must have a V8 of 5 litres bored out to 6 . It was actually built for Mercedes by Porsche ( yes really ) . I have dropped the dealer a line and hope to get a reply on various issues with the car especially as it is LHD . I would plan to use it as a ' semi ' daily car . As we own a car rental company in Glasgow I am hardly short of transport so this car would really be a cherished hobby toy and it appeals to be because of its exclusivity - but I just cany find out much about them . So thanks for the reply and please do keep any info coming ..... apprecaite the help so far

Gas Gas,

Couldn't find a lot of info on it either.

It was not exactly built by Porsche (or was E500). They were built in conjuntion with Porsche. Basically the cars went back and fort between MB and Porsche while being built (a little over 7,000 total E500s)

The E60 was a e500 upgraded by AMG (factory upgraded). It had both engine (to 385hp) and suspension upgrades. The can be tuned to over 400bhp & 0-62 in low 5secs. It is also known as a 'E500 6.0' in some quarters.

But beware, there are E60s out there that are not genuine AMG factory jobs. They are E500s converted afterwards. A VIN check should sort that out though.

PS: I think Mercedes Enthusiasts April edition did an article on the E60 AMG

BTW GG. I think I found the car you are looking at. Blue/Black? Big money? £16kish? Whew.

E60's are pretty rare beasts, but are essentially the same as an E500 and use the same motor albeit bored out to 6.0 and use AMG suspension

I've just sold my E500......great cars by the way.

There are a couple of things you need to check on E500's that will apply to the E60.

1) The under bonnet heat created my the M119 engine is very high. This coupled with the fact that Mercedes in a moment of madness made the main engine wiring harness from a new fangled bio degradable insulation which biodegraded much quicker than Mercedes anticipated. On the E500's the heat knackers the wiring harness badly and this can create all sorts of electrical problems. They will all fail and need replacing at some time.....you can be assured of that.

Normally it shows up with the check engine light or ABS light coming on and staying on.

Catch it in time and all you need is a new wiring harness which costs about £800 including labour.

Leave it and you run the chance of frying the ECU...the previous owner on my car had to replace the ECU, Coil packs and wiring harness....cost £2800. This was one of the reasons I bought the car, as I could live in comfort knowing that I would not have the dreaded wiring harness problem.

2) Timing chain: There should be no rattles from the front of the engine.

3) CATs: If they are rattling they need replacing.....not cheap on an E500 or E60.

4) Front suspension is low and with the weight of the V8 takes a hammering. The ride will be harsh but just check out to see if the car has had new dampers and springs....if not replacement will be ££££ especially as yours will be AMG items.

5) Full service history is paramount on these cars....walk away from anything else. In terms of build quality its fantastic and the M119 is an absolute peach that is capable of taking astronomical mileages.

6) Check to make sure that gearbox oil has been changed at correct intervals.

Other things to consider........I never got better than 18mpg from my car on a long run and this is normal for E500's....on an E60 its likely to be worse.
