Ml270 ESP/BAS light

Hi guys the ESP/BAS light illuminated on my partners ML270 today. I had already put the box into park before I had realised. When the light was on I couldn't physically put the car in gear. I switched the engine off and it never came back but any ideas what could be the cause?
