Found this elsewhere, but it seems of particular relevance to this board, so thought I'd up it here.
And NO, it's not a joke. It's happening now......

Warning!!!! Be aware of new car-jacking scheme.

You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside. Then you
lock all your doors, start the engine and shift or put into reverse. You
look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and you
notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window.

So, you shift the gear stick back into park or neutral, unlock your doors
and jump out of your car to remove that paper or whatever it is that is
obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car that is when
the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!!
Your engine was running, you would have left your purse in the car and
they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.

BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED IN GLASGOW AND
MANCHESTER
AND IS MAKING ITS WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!

Just drive away and remove the paper later! It is stuck to your window and
be thankful that you read this email. I hope you will forward this to
friends and family especially to women! A purse contains all
identification, and you certainly do NOT want someone getting your home
address. They already HAVE your keys!!!

JUST BE AWARE AND TAKE CARE IT WILL PROBABLY SOON ARRIVE IN YOUR AREA

 That sceme would be fantastic if you didn't want to scrap your car because of the charges... :)

You get your car taken away and you can also claim on the insurance.

Just make sure you take your personal belongings when you jump out the car!

Next thing it'll be installation of flame throwers on the side of cars like what they were doing in South Africa to prevent car jacking.

The author of this email Brian Malloy is a personal freind of mine. In fact, I had the pleasure of working alongside him for a year or so.
To the best of my knowledge, it happened twice in a Glasgow city centre car park in quick succession, and at one time it was thought it may lead to an epedemic! Hence the email! Thankfully they were isolated incidents. There were similar MO's, but only two using the 'piece of paper' trick, and as has been suggested, it was a few years ago now.
Daveenty...I would be more than interested to know where you came by this. Just curious!

In that case I apologise for posting it. I normally spot the hoax things, though this one did seem to have a ring of truth about it.

Found it on another (satellite) board this AM. The poster is someone I've known a long time, so had no reason to suspect it as being anything other than genuine.

No it's genuine. It was broadcast as a warning when it was thought that there was about to be an epedemic of car-jacking using this MO. As it turned out, it was two isolated incidents. To be fair, it's a couple of years old now.
Strange coincidence though! I vaguely remember this. A blast from the past!
It was anticipated as the next big thing, but car-jacking never actually took off up here. It was more prevelant south of the border.

Surprisingly (or not) it seems to happen round here on a regular basis.

Read about it in the local rag quite often (not necessarily this method though, more often scrotes with knives or guns nowadays)

A couple of years ago (company trip), I was picked up at Johannesburg in a brand new S-Class taxi. Impressed at how much better it was than the other taxis in the line, I complimented the driver. He explained that about a month previously, his last one had been car-jacked at gunpoint! The journey completed without incident, but I was certainly more alert than usual until I got to the hotel.

This is a prevalent crime in South Africa, and I have always been thankful that we don't see it very much here. Somewhat surprising in a way, as it's an easy crime - guaranteed keys and no damage to the vehicle.

They open the letterbox grab your keys and away!
Cousins next door neighbour had their RX8 nicked and another BMW 2 doors up.
Thank God the keys to his S4 were in his jacket pocket upstairs:shock:
