Hi to everyone,

Having browsed the site I have just taken the plunge and bought a 1991 W124 300D with about 120k. I am not new to the marque but never bought a car at this age or mileage. I've been heartened by the mostly positive comments and posts regarding the W124 reliability and particularly the 300D as a long distance mile-muncher.

The car has been regularly serviced down in England but as I am in West/Central Scotland I don't know of any local(ish) specialist that I can trust for sevicing etc.

I would be very grateful for any guidance on this and will quote any recommendation to whoever gets the work of looking after the car. I am sure there is a wealth of skill and knowledge out there, so if you know of a good and reliable specialist in Ayrshire/Strathclyde or in fact anywhere in Scotland then I would be most grateful for any information.

Hoping that I don't need to post here very regularly but will of course remain an avid follower and offer any advice I can also.

Thanks in advance,

Duncan

Welcome to the brotherhood of W124 diesel owners...

I can't give any recommendations for servicing in your area but would strongly suggest you steam clean & waxoyl the underside of the car asap. Rust kills them like nothing else will, so deal with it now

Your local MOT test station would be a good port of call for a quick inspection and a run-down of the local garages. A good MOT tester will be a mine of information and he'll have seen plenty of W124s before so pick his brains. If possible book the car in when it's quiet so you can get to talk

Most of the servicing can be done by anyone but there are a few foibles that only an expert can cure quickly & cheaply so keep looking!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for you reply.

I had read elsewhere about the benefits of waxoyl treatment on the W124 so I will definitely aim to get this done as soon as I can. It would be a shame to have her eaten by rust when everything else has been looked after so well...

I shall pick the brains of the local MOT guy for some further info or recommendations.

My main problem is that having not owned an 'old' car before I have always just relied on taking cars to main dealers. I know that for the 300D this isn't a cost effective option hence my desire to find a good specialist.

Really appreciate all your advice and I found the W124 site very useful too.

Regards,
Duncan

Hello,

Regarding "the benefits of waxoyl treatment on the W124".

Is waxoyl better than conventional underseal?

Other than the wheel-arches are other areas of the 124 particulartly rust-prone? (I don't have access to a ramp.)

Thanks in advance.
