This report was comissioned by Gordon Brown, so it is hardly surprising that the conclusions of the report favour raising taxes, hardly a fair and unbiased report I would say!!!

I'm not here very often, but I lurk now and then.

I thought we already did pay per mile? The high tax on fuel has taken care of that for years, has it not?

Poor countryside folk should be made to walk to work. Serve 'em right for living in the country.

On the positive side of all this technology. the use of numberplate recognition now linked to the MOT & Insurance databases should result in fewer uninsured & dodgy vehicles pushing up our premiums.

Unless you find a car similar to yours and borrow its number plate...... Ensuring that the car you borrowed the plate from is taxed of course

Which is why the insurance write offs have their numberplates removed when they are loaded on the transporter by the company to whom the insurance company sells the wrecks.

Another numpty idea from Uk plc, let's track every car in the country. Complete rubbish. These are the same people that suggested they could fix congestion by slowing everyone down. How? Change the highway code so that we "interpret speed limits in km, not miles". Motorway limit falls to 70km/hr, about 45mph I think. If they ever get the MOT or DVLA databases to work for more than 24hours at a time then they can start to dream about tracking a few of them.

It's interesting to see that we all know congestion is a problem, and all agree that we already pay too much tax. What's the answer? Simple ideas can be the best. How do we crack this one team? This forum can fix just about anything...! :)

I am told 42 BILLION from VED and 9 Billion spent on the roads  - just over 21% of the tax raised spent on the roads and then we have fuel duty a rolling road tax the more you drive and the more fuel you use the more YOU ARE TAXED

come on someone get more upset than me

in a true response to the present administration's style

we should be looking how to capitalise on the changes proposed.
Firstly, we need to set up our own employment agency, as I for one will be giving up working away from my home town if I have to pay another 10K a year to do it, and looking for a well-paid job closer to home ( which I would have taken anyway, rather than driving 40 miles a day in the rush, had it existed)
We also need to set up a car-sharing scheme. By being members of this forum, of course we get rid of the problem of cadging a lift in a Corsa or a Hyundai, and the instant loss of street cred which that would bring.
We can find local C, E, S, SL drivers etc, and share their fun journey to work as well as cut congestion, and get to know new people.
Of course, I'll feel sorry for them when I have to go home early because of the kids or something, but I'm sure we can get around minor troubles like that.

And we need to charge for it, so that we can pay for all the admin.
