My c class 203 has developed a noise. i have posted before and had a few helpful hints but none seem to work. It is like a grinding or bearing noise.Really sound like it is coming from gearstick area, could it be a propshaft problem or is the sound just resonating through, Really need a fix as I am selling, Thanks pt

sounds like the handbrake cable has come out of its clip this is quite common.Take down the heat shield for the exhaust and refit cable into blue clip and see if noise goes.

RJR28/12.
WHAT AN ABSOLUTE STAR YOU.
Managed to trace the cable, and can see that the blue clip has infact broken and the cable is rubbing on propshaft. I cant get the heat shield off, but managed to move the cable a tiny amount and the noise has vanished. I will now take it to my local garage, and get it fixed. Yesteday i was told it was the gearbox bearings had gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again, Paul

Hi, looks like I might have the same problem. Just had the car at local tyre/brake garage who've told me that can't be the cable or clip as the foot brake's working fine - Anyone know is the brake still works with the clip broken? They were looking under the car, in the centre, towards the rear wheels, is this where the clip is? should they have been looking towards the front? This seems strange as the noise seems to eminating from below the gear lever. Grateful for more advice so I can direct garage where to look!!

For info, the problem was indeed a broken parking brake clip; car now fixed. Thanks to all who assisted with diagnosis.
