I always use Esso Diesel, not worth the chance with Supermarket Fuel and I do think my e320cdi drives better on the better quality fuel, looking at the current prices, there is not much difference in cost per litre anyway, so its a no brainer to use a better fuel.

Agreed. Always use a premium brand. But never established whether worth using the premium brand top fuel. For example shell normal diesel vs shell v power diesel! I usually stick to normal shell diesel.

Branded man myself, or if supermarket sludge burning I'll add in millers diesel eco max.

More often or not, its how often the fuel is changed at a station that matters, busy station = fresher fuel.
