R107 Or W107

i was convinced i had a w107 1983 280 sl - but a freind reckons its a r107 and im confused

can anyone shed any light on what i have please

Its an R107 - R for Roadster. W would be Wagon which is an estate car.

Its also the start of your VIN number ! R107xxxxxxxxx

The W does mean wagen, but that doesn't mean estates, it just means car.

R is roadster,
C is coupe,
W is normal car.

Still, many people just use the W prefix when referring to the coupes and roadsters. Its not 'wrong' to call it a W107, its just not technically correct.

I think the W is derived from the German PKW, which means Personenkraftwagen or Passenger car in English.
