I'd like to improve the noise coming out of the back of my SL55 and have been advised the best mod for one of these is to remove the resonators/secondary cat etc.... However I am a little confused as to which ones should be taken out.

I am right in thinking it is 158 and 159 from the diagram below, leaving the rear boxes still in place? I don't want it completely in your face boy racer loud, would just be nice to hear the V8 rumble a little clearer!

As far as I can remember then yes, 158 and 159 would be removed, usually with the addition of an X pipe (similar but wider to b in your drawing) somewhere between them to balance the system.

I know that a member on here (AMGeed) had his E55 done like this, and was very happy with the results. OK it's a slightly different system, but more or less the same components.

I would personally recommend MSL Performance for this mod, they have an in-house fabricator and will also advise the best way of doing it.

Great thank you, I am fortunate enough to have Pipecraft and Haywood and Scott within stones throw of my house so will use one of these companies.

Thanks
Chris

Hiya Chris,

As Dave above posted, I had the secondary cats and resonator removed (158 &159) from my E55 and replaced with a x-pipe for balancing.
The result was just what I wanted. Not intrusive or any drone, but when opening the throttle a real V8 burble.
A couple of photos of the work done-

That's exactly the noise I want, not over the top but loud enough with the taps open. I had a Milltek fitted to my Audi S5 and the result was very similar!

How much did you pay for the work to be done (pm if you wish?). I've got it booked in for inspection at Pipecraft tomorrow and Haywood and Scott on Friday, just want to make sure i'm not being ripped off!!

Cheers

Sounds good mate, I popped down to Pipecraft yesterday (very reputable exhaust place in the area) and they are happy to remove the pipes but he did say that the X over pipe is not required? I am aware it is to split the gases out the back but what other reason is it required?

Thanks

I think mine has a "simple" back-box delete, though I'm not sure :)

It sounds unreal. Good luck in your quest!

Insist on it Chris. It is necessary as Whitenemesis explained.

If anyone still has their resonators after doing this mod please PM me as I'm trying to source some. Thanks!
