Contining the theme of conspicuous thrift, I've started to drive more "normally" (let's say) around my part of west London. By normally, I especially mean no foot-on-the-floor away from traffic lights and other such tiny pleasures that we all indulge in. The result ?

Around town fuel consumption has dropped from roughly 26 mpg to an astonishingly thrifty 33 mpg.

Next step is to see how much better it gets by switching off 3 of the cylinders .....

Try a tow rope, providing you don`t mind going where the chap in front is going.

Coaxed 51mpg out of my E220cdi. Stayed @ 60 on mway and 50 on A roads. It was suprising how many other drivers were doing just the same as me. Used to get 42mpg on the same run doing 80mph on mway and 70 on A roads.

I wish I lived in Venezuala for fuel. 0.7p/litre. With fuel prices like that threads like this wouldn't exist. And the planets climate still would be the same.

A pal of mine (with a 99 diesel elegance) was telling me that he had tried the trick of getting 'towed' by an HGV.
It seems that the trick is to show yourself to the trucker by appearing close in both of his mirrors to tell him you are there, then tuck up close behind. It then seems that you can take your foot off the gas and trundle along at the truck speed.

Thus if you don't mind a slow journey,

(Or possibily being splattered on the back of the truck when he stops)

You might save some cash.

(Far too dangerous for me. I'll stick to whizzing sports cars about).

Just invested £103.54 in Diesel this morning
I had the little fuel pump connected to an E Class on the dash following a 32mpg average 7hr trip through Wales yesterday. Ouch

That's very true, there are lot's of drivers on the inside lane these days, most people are slowing down to save money. Even seen a couple of Astons and a brand new Lexus 600 crawling along at about 50mph on motorway.

My daily commute is within cycling distance so I'm thinking of an Electric Cycle................Its another good way of limiting one's exposure to rising carbon fuel prices!!

And a brilliant way of maximising your exposure to white van man and the cost cutting within the NHS..(hopefully not tho...)
