Just had a steering wheel put on at my local indy, i allways thought you had to disconnect the battery to do this, but the guy who changed it over didn't disconnect it, he didn't tell me how though. He could not put the clock right as i have an aftermarket sat nav, i was told it had to have the old comand fitted to do this, i had a clock put right on a R230 with an aftermarket sat nav at comand in lightwater Surrey although it was a digital clock which they done with Star, wondering why they couldn't put it right

IN Star you have to tell the car that no sat nav, and the clock is set on the cluster instead, you just do the same as with a 350 that does not come with sat nav.

To change the wheel, its key out and wait 20 mins, no need to disconnect the battery.

Isn't it kind of risky changing a wheel (more to the point, removing the airbag) without first disconnecting the battery?

Not at all David, that circuit is dead with the key out. you wait the 20 mins for any caps to discharge.

Handling airbags is not so dangerous as many make out. The connectors are designed to earth the airbag connection pins together when the connector is removed. This prevents any static electricity present from damaging the electronics and potentially causing the bag to fire prematurely. .
