Hi all

1998 CLK320 w208 Coupe

When cornering hard with the Auto box in 3rd, for example round a large rounderbout at a motorway juction, I get a horrible smell coming into the car, a bit like hot brakes/clutch friction material heating up ?

The tyres are not squeling, so I have ruled that one out...!!!

Is this something to do with the auto box and is it dangerous or wearing something out, allbeit fun to continue....???

Many thanks..........:) :) :)

You mention "cornering hard", does this only happen in 3rd gear? If so it sounds like the g/box. If you can replicate it in another gear it may be something silly like a tyre rubbing.
If it IS 3rd gear related it may be the clutch pack on it's way out, have you checked g/box fluid level or changed the fluid? What mileage has the car done?

To my knowledge it would be very hard to get a smell from the gear box into the car, also I cant see how you would know that you are in 3rd at any one time going round a round about with the gear box fitted to that car.

Thanks for the replies.....

The car was definatley in 3rd as I selected with the lever for the auto box !
The car has ony covered 65k miles with a full MB history !

Are there some sort of friction plates in the auto box as it was definately that kind of smell, not the wife !!!

Is it not a bad engine mount, and the smell is something rubbing in the engine bay when cornering?

Yes there are, but the gearbox is a pretty well sealed unit so how would the smell get out? (Unless you took out the dipstick, if you have one, and put your nose to the filler tube). If the smell got out so would your ATF.
