stuck in 1st gear

hi. i have a problem with my 2001 E320.

the automatic gearbox doesnt seem to want to change gear, ive been told that is has gone into 'limp mode' but i havent done anything to the car. i gave it a new battery 3 months ago and it was working fine then. i had the ABS and ESP warning lights came on but have since gone away.

does anyone have any ideas why this is doing this?
