HMMM.

suicide doors hinge behind the direction of opening rather than in front. they are know as suicide doors cos you step out into traffic which hits you and you protect the door which is behind you, rather than the traffic hitting the door and squashing you between it and the car.

Mazda RX8 Rear doors or the New Roller Phantom both have suicide doors.

no b pillar in car at all.

so non suicidal doors are presumably potentially very, very bad for your legs and neck if you happen to be in the wrong place at the right time ?

terrible...always get out on the nearside, unless you have parked facing the wrong way..then you should get out normally. if you have suicide doors tho, you could drive about in reverse and pretend they go the right way..... on the 2 cars above the doors are for the rear passengers so i guess if you are the driver you wont worry too much.

Altho if someone were to offer you a lift in either,,,go for the roller coz they have more money and it always looks better getting out of a roller and saying pick me up in half a hour james in a right posh hoity-toity voice. ( Ay say James, Call beck rind to this hise in half n hour and be sharp abite it, what what!)

and you bang your head getting out the back of an RX8 coz you have cramp in your legs and they become wild and uncontrollable when you attempt to extricate yourself from the rear of one.

Re Suicide Doors

I always believed that suicide doors are so named because, unlike conventional doors, if you open the door whilst on the move you are likely to be dragged out onto the road by the handle due to wind pressure.

well i suppose that rite too b ut only a person who wants to commit suicide would open the doors while on the move. but if you happen to fall out accidently then suicide doors would scoop you back up where as these damn things today allow you to fall under your own wheels and run yourself over

Suicide doors are named so, as you generally stop with traffic coming from behind. A car passing, hitting a conventional door stuck out into the road takes your door off but leaves you standing (had it happen), but a suicide door slams back and crushes you against the car.
Can't understand why anyone would want one! - the roller probably has some sort of protection system but still wouldn't want one. Ugly bugger anyway.
Now a maybach ......

boring tho this is..the mazda door does not open unless the front door is already open. the frames form the b pillar.

on the phantom...well you woudnt belive it but its opened by a button. good old electronics....shuts the same way too..nothing so vulgar as actually having to push and pull the door. i would think that the door wont open unless you had come to a complete stop much like the vario roof options on sl and slk's...altho you can have them sorted so they open and close up to 30mph too. and if you have the remote roof opening option you can just press and release the button on the fob and the roof does its thing rather than pushing the button for the whole 22seconds...not that i would have had that done either...falls foul of Health and Safety laws regarding hydraulic systems.....do-gooders.
and of course the maybach has proper doors.

Further to this. A collegue of mine's father used to hammer rollers into shape for a coachbuilding firm for 40 years.

he says that suicide doors were so named as they had a tendancy to slip the latch and commit Hari-Kari on their own accord. hence the doors themselves commited suicide.

He is of the opinion that you wouldn't be dragged out by the door as your hand would be pulled away from the catch as the door arked away from your car. He has also said he never heard of anyone ever being dragged from a moving car by this type of door arrangement.

so there you go. he was in the war you know!!!!

yet another answer.

stolen from a website that deals with car crashes and stuff

Suicide Doors
In the old days, these doors were prone to open in a crash. Since this was before the time of seatbelts, a driver or passenger could easily be thrown forward, right out of the car and onto the street in an accident. So driving a car this dangerous was said to be "suicidal." And that's where they got the name "suicide doors."
