I was doing 221km/h (138mph) last night for long extended periods, legally :) .... the joys of driving German cars in Germany :)

I don't think that there's that many more accidents.
Not all of the autobahn network is unrestricted. There are areas where due to the nature of the road or terrain your speed is restricted e.g. twisty sections, bad surface or near junctions.

The german police do tend to prosecute more people for dangerous driving than the english ones, which I think is more important. After all it's not the speed itself which tends to cause accidents but the method of driving and use in inappropriate situations.

Petrol was also a bit cheaper over there than here last time I went.

Good question, Ive never seen one which was clearly excess speed related. They have sensible measures regarding speed, for example lorries are not to overtake during certain times of the day and night, and certain tracks of motorway are restricted to 70mph until after 8pm at night, but more recently they are replacing static signs with dynamic overhead boards and just vary speeds according to traffic situations. Night time travelling is the best, because apart from Larmschütz (noise abatement) areas the roads are near empty and there are no restrictions.

Here in Stuttgart Diesel is 1.26 (~1.00 pound) and petrol was a tad more expensive.

There are more lorries on the autobahn than on the motorways.

I remember driving from Augsberg to Frankfrut, the autobahn road surfaces were full of mends and potholes in 1986.

Been back on my C-class twice in 1997 and 1999 along the romantic route and Bavarian-Stuttgart and Munich was very nice.

Pretty good at 4K rpm in 110mph. My C-class 3.5Krpm in 80mph.

Last Friday night I went to West End for the theatre at 65mph and managed 180 miles in a quarter of the fuel gauge. In winter and at higher speed say 80mph will cover only 100 miles per quarter of the fuel gauge.

My slk is a constant 100 miles per quarter of the fuel gauge no matter what speed at 55 or 65 or 80 mph.

Great to see a retired gentleman using his car in the manner it was meant to be used. You see so many people buying fast cars such as Porsche, Ferrarri, Mercs and using them as genital extensions driven by snails, sad really!

Given the way the C-Class drives flat out, so firm solid and stable, your SL must be even more incredible. 155mph to Sweden next time ? :D

Anything above 150 IS fast. ;);)

Back in the 60's I used to drive a MK10 jag from Watford to Shefield,,at 125mph flat out it would empty both tanks between Shefield and Newport Pagnal, that was 2 times 12 gals.

Things do happen quickly as you say even at that speed,,cant see me doing 200 in the near future :D:D

On a visit to the tank museum I was amazed at how small they are inside,, the engine noise must have been horrendous.

I had to laugh at the Swedish tank there with air suspension and air con

Fastest Ive been is ~175mph in my tuned Sierra Cosworth, so Im jealous :D

Trouble is, on the autobahns, when you can go that fast you do! and at these high speeds, if you spill your coffee or drop your mars bar, by the time you look up, your Knockin on Heavens Door :rolleyes:

I always thought the Swedes were up there at the pinnacle of greenliness.... aircon in tanks, now thats going overboard, just think of the harm they are doing to the planet :rolleyes:

Yes the Swedish tank was clever - no turret and rotating apparatus, but able to lower the front of the tank using the pneumatic suspension so as to depress the gun if firing downhill. That may well have made it roomier inside too, so as to enable full enjoyment of the aircon! :rolleyes:
