I am hoping to acquire a 10-15 year old SL in the next couple of months (any one selling? 6 cyl preferred). Car will be used only for fun at weekends and kept in locked garage. Is there an insurer who will offer a low premium for a car like this used so little?

any views appreciated

Insurance

My insurance is with Equity Red Star, 6000 miles per year on a classic policy, agreed value, car parked off road (not garaged) and in the south east of London for £94 a year.

THAT SEEMS VERY CHEAP DAGGLE............

I HAVE A 1987 'D' 300SL, 1500 MILES PER ANNUM,GARAGED OVER NIGHT......USUAL STUFF £198. FOOTMAN JAMES,THEY SPONSER MOST CLASSIC CAR SHOWS........................

KEITH IT TOOK ME SOMETIME TO FIND A VERY NICE 6CYL SL, DONT GET DISSAPOINTED AS YOU GO ALONG,I LOOKED AT AROUND 15 IN TOTAL. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A NEWER SHAPE, 1990 ONWARDS YOU SHOULD BE OK.

Footman james insure my 220SEb with agreed valuation, garaged, 3,000 miles, breakdown cover etc. for £107. To insure the 230/6 same mileage, different address (unsecure) is £47 extra.

Not to mine it didn't - 1981 380 SLC £235 inc continental cover & breakdown. Mind you, I am in a horrific postcode for any insurance.

I saved a packet with Footman James, although you guys are using much smaller numbers, I struggled to get my 87 500SL below £500. Out of interest why the 6cyl. I searched for a while for mine and have to say I fell in love with the 5 litre V8 - the performance is wicked and I get at least 20mpg after it was given a good looking over by a specialist.

why 6 cyl?

6 cyl rationale:
- I already have a 6 cyl and like it
- maintenance costs (the devil you know etc...)
- fuel costs (I dont believe the theory that there's not much difference)
- would rather use my constrained funding on best body/spec I can find
- less weight , better for corners
- I dont need the extra umph of the V8!

just a personal view
