Sorry to butt in guys, while you discuss this and way way off topic indeed, but always useful ;)

Whenever I do a bit of soldering, and remember to put on the heat shrink first. Regardless how quick I am with the iron, the bloomin heat shrink - shrinks before I get a chance to slide it over the joint.
Do you ever have this? I guess I try to hard to keep wires short and neat or the cheap heatshrink is too heat sensitive.
But would be nice to hear if you guys have these 'burdens' also

Yes, that can be a problem, especially with short wires obviously!

If crucial, wrap a thin strip of damp kitchen roll several times around the shrink while soldering.
Obviously if any water gets in the solder or on the conductors, no dice.

You are also taking too long to do a joint, a iron at the right temp and a good clean tip, though normally you should not apply solder to the tip as it burns it, do apply a little to heat the join quickly, and at the same time apply the solder to the joint, as soon as it is all bright silver, remove from the iron.

Another point to remember is the plastic on then wire will always shrink and pull back, so in the case of a butt join (not twisted) just strip ½ the amount that you need off the wire, tin the wires on the soldering iron, let them cool down, fit the heat shrink, pull it back as far as possible, overlap the wires to be soldered, apply the iron to the joint,, as the wires are tinned it will join instantly, take away the iron, wet your finger and place it on the join to take out the heat.
