Not sure whether I've just been unlucky but all my w124 (currently on no. 5) appear to have ultra-sensitive acceleration in reverse (come to think of it my 123's did too). Trying to reverse up a slight gradient is nigh on impossible as either a little gas produces insufficient oomph, a little more providing Caterham-beating acceleration. Is this normal?

I cant remember that, I know that some of the 772.6 gearboxes offer 2 speeds in reverse dependent on the position of the S-W switch, but I do not know if this applies to the earlier box on yours

My current is the 5spd auto, but has been the same on the 4spd's too. Not really a problem usually but yesterday I was reversing into a space in front of a mint Ctiroen DS 21 and my palms were sweating by the time I got out!

Mine did it too. Was particularly embarrassing reversing out of a gravel car park once. Never tried the switch thing though. Mine was always in S

Isnt it all to do with the nature of the accelerator design on these cars until you get used to them.
