Hi Guys

A bit of friendly advice required. My 2001 C200 has done 65K all easy mainly motorway miles. Out of warranty and the only thing I am concerned about is a small leak on the rear diff. It appears to be coming from the the diiff to the left hand drive.

I have had it checked at the service, my friend is a mechanic and he said it is only a weep and nothing to be concerend about as the oil was full. It does not whine either.

Has anyone had any work done on there rear diff? Do people tend to just buy an exchange diff allready overhauled? Or do people get each bearing seal replaced? What is the likely costs? Could anyone recommend anyone in the london/essex area!

Also has anyone replaced there exhaust? What is the likely cost and can anyone reccomend anyone or is Kwik fit as good as any?

Thanks for the info, will just help in making my decision easier should I have a problem in the near future.

Regards

Mick

These weeps are fairly common, and often look worse than they really are - as you have found from your level check. It may be worth checking that the diff breather is not blocked, which may be allowing the casing to pressurise as it gets hot.

Where is the diff breather located? Is it on top? Left or right? How big is the hole?

There are vents each side, the oil foams when hot and it is often just oil stains on the outside. If the oil is leaking onto the driveway then it needs to be checked out. Your car is too late for the modified vent plates.

I had replacement breather and 3 new oil seals fitted to my E320 at 60K miles. Cost was around £300 inc vat at the dealer.
I was getting the odd drip on the drive way (I never found out where the even drips went  )

Hi was this work done at a Merc dealer? They normally charge 300 to change the wipers! What garage did you use?

i just had the side seals replaced on my w202 at an indy in london at the weekend to be on the safe side (occasional drips). £250 all in. I'm monitoring it now to make sure it was a job done properly, but all seems ok.
