Drivers can only be stopped by the Police for alcohol testing for 3 reasons.
1) when they have cause to suspect a driver has been drink driving
2) when they suspect a traffic offence has been comitted.
3) after an accident.

They are not allowed to stop drivers just on the off chance! However this has never bothered Sussex Police who get round it by routinely stopping cars to carry out a "vehicle condition checks" this is followed by a sniff of the air and the inevitable,Have you been drinking Sir ? Seems this practice is now encouraged by HMG.

I was stopped by Hampshire police last year popping into a hotel at Fleet to look for a vacant B&B. Immediately after I drove off the premise, I saw blue light and was stopped and tested.

Later I gathered they were waiting just outside for vehicles to come out.

I thought this is illegal activities waiting just outside a pub. How many times I was asked whether I want a drink when I popped into Harvester for a meal.

Once again, time to add another 10 minutes to my estimated journey time to allow for yet another fishing exercise. I am amazed by the number of police check points I come across in the Uk whilst driving around. Checks to see if the vehicle is roadworthy,( seperate checks for lights in winter ) to check tax, to check insurance, to check occupants...the list is endless. Trouble is, when you have cleared these checks on a Tuesday morning, there is nothing on the system to prevent you being stopped and checked for the very same things the next morning and the following afternoon and the day after.

If the police decided to pick ten houses at random in your street, enter them and check to see if you had stolen property, drugs, were fiddling the gas / leccy meters and did so with absolutely no prior intelligence, just random choosing, would the country just so ' OK , fair enough " ?

Been through Airport Security lately?

New regs mean that EVERY electrical 'gadget' has to be switched ON - to 'prove' what they are. Razor, toothbrush, ipod, camera, nintendo, noise-cancelling headphones, DVD player and laptop.
As I (rather cheekily) pointed out, my name is David - C of E and NOT Mohammed - Islam. The remark went down well, as the security guy said "I know exactly what you mean - ridiculus, isn't it."!!

Police have all but jacked in their ' stop and search ' routines after complaints it was criminalising certain groups in this country. As a motorist, I'm sick to the back teeth of being criminalised.

Complaints from whom? I bet it wasn't from the UK Christians..!!!

It is fairly obvious that not all 'certain groups' are terrorists - but the majority of terrorists seem to be from 'certain groups'..!!!!! Same goes for muggings, stabbings, etc etc

What a mad, mad world we live in - appease the minority with total disregard for the majority.

Don't have a problem with proper policing, same as years ago when many more proper plods out and about.

As regards the later complaints of PC security checks, stop searches etc, we as a nation (not me and i daresay not many here) have elected a long succession of fools to govern us, and we have exactly the country we deserve, turkeys voting for Christmas anyone?

'Don't have a problem with proper policing,'... neither do I but random breath testing is a sledge hammer for a small nut. There are drink drivers but I'd venture very few compared to burglars, muggers and kiddie fiddlers. What an over reaction to catch a few hard core DD's
