Its not illegal to download the latest additions to cameras for speeding in France in UK - or so I'm told, I hope?

So does anyone have any info on how to download latest to a TOM TOM if thats possible, or should I be looking at an APPLE smart phone or similar.

What do you all use when driving in France?

Recently in Strasbourg my TOM TOM listed mostly all, but a few new ones since it became illegal to use in France, so I was ready to switch it off if there was an occasion to be stopped by the fuzz out there. I know you can spot where new cameras are by the single sign they have places a few hundred kilometres before, which is all very well till some Bozo knocks the sign over.

I use www.SCDB.info/alpine which is compatible with my alpine unit.

I also have an Origin B2 and a Bikers TomTom......I do not use the TomTom much these days but fixed cameras in France used to be available with the usual caveat.

My 2 month old Tom Tom Go 6000, when in France, shows "Danger Areas" rather than speed cameras, the unit came with 3 months free trial of the speed cameras (which expires in September just before we head to Spain and France!) after which, if I want to continue getting updates, it will cost £20pa.

Don't let the French police catch you with a satnav showing French speed camera locations - they will immediately confiscate it!

Yes my tomtom converted them to 'danger areas' as mentioned.

You could of course find a set of speed camera poi files and associate something inoccuous (mcdonalds) for example as the icon.... Not of course that i would recommend it.

I remember the french police used to make cars drive over their snooper devices and then whack on a big fine, IMO it just ain't worth it use the danger areas ones and slow down accordingly - the french system doesn't connect with ours anyway so you won't get a fine etc from a fixed camera machine (unless driving a hire car of course). A gendarme on the other hand is different... Like a cash register lol

You can get the POI files from Pocketgpsworld.

As said though i wouldn't be caught using it. The speed limit is 80mph anyway on most of the M'Way. So you'll already be going a whole 10mph faster than in the UK.......

Thanks for the useful input and advice.

As I said in Strasbourg recently the cameras are starting to appear in or on rural A roads usually at 70 or 90 kms, so keep a weary eye out for them too.

I too also have danger areas installed on Tomtom but it never seemed to activate where a camera was situated, but then I still don't know how the danger area works, or, when it does activate & how do you know when your out of it again?

Got an on the spot fine of 90 euros for crossing the cross hatchings at a set of traffic lights in Antibes 5 years ago, Fuzz obviously saw uk reg & swooped on me for an easy nicking ! AND ESCORTED ME TO NEAREST ATM FOR ON THE SPOT PAYMENT.
