Whistle noise on acceleration, suspect exhaust manifold

Hi guys i taken my 2015 Mercedes vito 1.6 into a turbo specialist earlier and asked what they thought a whistle noise was on revving and accelerating through the gears and they said it’s a suspect exhaust manifold gasket leaking! But I’m a diy’er and would like to sort this issue myself as I’ve only just brought the van yesterday and can’t afford dealer stealer prices atm, also to point out it’s the newest shaped model and just wanted to know how hard would it be to replace a gasket on these? As it looks pretty crammed and no room under the hood

Can you spray something on the suspect gasket to identify.

Could it be a turbo pipe.

Hi, it all looks a really right squeeze to even get in there to even see the manifold! I can only see the turbo and actuator and the heat shields around it, I’m guessing everything will have to be taken apart to even get in there, i called my local mecedes specialist earlier today and they said the engine doesn’t have to be taken out to gain access to change the gasket! But it’s a days work at £500 plus vat, Ouch... lol

A days work for a merc indy is a long days work for a DIY er and the down time waiting on parts.
If you are adament to diy, first i would get a second opinion from an MB indy who knows these engines maybe better than a turbo specialist. Then take it from there.
That said a gasket on the exhaust would give a more chugging noise and you will have evident spitting marks. A leak on a pipe more a whistle I would gave thought.

And it sounds exactly the same as mine but a bit worse! The whistle on mine goes away when the engine is hot, which suggests to me when the the metals/gaskets have expaned under heat its sealing the leak?

That's exactly what a small leak on the exhaust manifold does. If you're lucky nipping it up a little will make it go away (be careful not to break the bolt/stud!). But usually not for long. The whistle occurs when boost starts to rise and is due to the high pressure in the exhaust manifold.

Hi thanks for the heads up would you happen to know the correct torque settings the manifold bolts are ment to be? Because like you say I don’t want to over tighten them and risk having one of them snap off in the block

Hi guys I still have this issue and put up with the whistle noise since I've owned the van but I think now is the time to try do the repairs as I've fixed about 10 other problems on van since so this is the last fix, does anyone have a guide on how to get at the exhaust manifold on the w447 109cdi? I've looked underneath and under the hood and cannot see where the exhaut manifold is located, it looks like I'd have to strip down the whole of the back of the engine to even get to it, turbo and cat off? As anyone here attempted to do a exhaust manifold repair on one of these vans?thanks
