You can now buy (£7.50) a red LASER to advise following drivers of their stopping distances:

So basically, it will blind an average tailgater, shining that line right across their eyes ... that should put them in a cheerful and appreciative mood

Almost 100% certain you would be done for having one of these. The fact they are shipped from abroad tells you something.

Look at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/contents/made and work on the principle that if such a device is not covered or absent from the regulations its illegal

I would counter that in a parliamentary democracy, if it's not expressly forbidden, it is legal.

That said, the first copper to see the first eejit with one of those on their car would pull them over.

This bit might cover it:

"Restrictions on fitting blue warning beacons, special warning lamps and similar devices

16. No vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle, shall be fitted with–

(a)a blue warning beacon or special warning lamp

Rubbish alternative to Distronic though.

I really, I mean really like the idea of telling that selfish git snorting my exhaust gasses to back off. I think myself considerate enough to allow them past if I am slowing them and they have somewhere to go.
This though doesn't effectively tell them they are too close as it's set to the same distance behind if stationary at the lights or if cruising nicely at 110.

I reckon it would be classed as a modification and make your insurance invalid....unless you tell them you have fitted it.

How, if the source is lower than the bonnet of a following car, would it ever shine across anyone's eyes?

All anyone would see would be a crisp red line in front of their car...unless travelling too close, in which case hey are tailgating.

These are just a number of technologies coming out - a combined rear and fog light. Audi have it on some of their new cars (R8?), here's a vid:

and I'm sure others aren't far behind.

As long as it is pointed down, I can't see it blinding anyone, especially as the focus is a line not a dot.

Haha......so the following driver sees just two small red dots in front but two large red lines on the road, wonders what they are, keeps looking at them......and runs into the two small red dots in front! :-D

I suppose you could fit a row of mirrors on the front leading edge of the bonnet, that way when you was near the guy with the laser you could blind him so he would have to pull over and get out of your way.
