yet another battery draining problem

Since being made redundant in Dec, I rarely use the car, 2002 C220 estate, and after a few flat battery recharges decided to get a new battery. Did that, a nice Bosch job from the sponsors, and still getting flat battery after a week of non use. Surely thats not right. Can I uncouple the earth lead to the car to save the battery, or will this affect the key system, or anything else. I probably use the car maybe twice a month now for long journeys and thats all.

Someone will advise about disconnecting the lead, it doesnt sound like a good idea on a model of that age. Buying a 'smart' battery conditioner might be a good and small investment.

anything I can check myself, have plenty of spare time, mulitmeter, and not a lot of spare cash. Would ther be any problems disconnecting the battery for 2 weeks or so.

No, you can disconnect but not good to do it all the time

As you have a multi meter set it to amps DC on the 10 amp range to start with, it needs to go in series with any of the 2 battery leads, you can join the meter up any way round.

Do it after the car has been turned off for ½ hour and the key out of ignition.

Slowly turn the meter range down till you get a sensible reading, the max current should be well under 50milli amps.

Please note that your meter will have special socket for the Amps ranges for one lead
