2002 A160,W210 E430 estate and a king of kings.... W215 CL600 BI TURBO
No need to apologise ....... All the quirks of the CL were made clear .... I new it was noisy and had a fault and bid accordingly .... Previous owner was adamant there was no noise! Paid £6000 ( OTT?). But I am going to enjoy putting it right. It is a truly great drive. Thanks all.
I think that was a good price... not OTT at all and belive it or not they are quite an enjoyable car to work on but expect huge amounts of hand injuries and swareing (that engine bay is as full as it could possibly get)

Front ABC update

Thought I would bring my post up to date with regard to my ABC problems. Removed front bumper, n/s headlight and washer jet. Removed valve on strip down found small blue seal damaged on the yellow mag. valve. This seal is also fitted to the red mag. valve. The seal also has a blue o ring underneath it. Still trying to locate a replacement. ( see pictures). Removed pump. Not dismantled yet. Got replacement front ABC crossover pipe, filters and oil.

Can you show a pic of the whole valve block?

Ahhhh thank you. Interesting. This is the new style block only fitted I believe 09 onwards, backwards compatible and has replaced the '99 block on cars that have gone into MB service centres for ABC work.

That o-ring you're missing, can you get it off without breaking it?

Door mirrors- folding mirrors can fail due to stiffened wires. - Mostly resolved on facelift

Doors- soft closing can fail due to broken wires in the door harness.- Mostly resolved on facelift

I once had a folding mirror issue on a 2009 ML, the door mirror direction indicator stopped working, no problem i thought a new bulb needed......£250 later a new wiring harness was fitted because the one on the car had failed due to using the folding action too much!

why could the old one not be repaired ? not unusual for a car to chew thru its door harness due to much use

This is true, member Haylands half-rebuilt his 215 door harnesses with new wire, solder, heatshrink and much patience.

Well it's a two part seal. Outer nylon ring ( suppose it acts like a piston ring ) with a soft rubber O ring underneath. I have pulled it about quite a bit and got it off. Broke the underlying O ring, it's very soft so I suspect it acts like some sort of spacer/spring. It 6mm I/D 1.5mm thickness. Outer ring difficult to measure. In hot water moment trying to get it back into shape.. haha.

Super glued o ring together so I could measure O/D and its slightly under 10mm but more than 9.5mm so I would estimate 9.75mm. With the outer nylon ring would bring it to just over 10mm. About right I would say as the piston is 10mm dia. thus the ring would protrude slightly giving a perfect seal.

Ok. If you can send me a sample I can almost certainly source this. I've made some enquiries and it doesn't look too difficult to get hold of.

Cheers Craig ... could you p/m your postal address? Do you know what force is required to remove the pulley flange from the pump?.

Will do. And yes, a fkin' lot!!! You need to put some oxy-acetylene on the pulley and then immediately a big bearing puller. I didn't go down the rebuilt route myself, I was afraid of destabilising any tempering of the pump internals.

ABC update

Thought I'm would bring you up to speed on ABC progress. recon pump arrived from Germany during week. Fitted pump and reservoirs. Filled with genuine Mercedes fluid. Primed pump by turning pulley by hand whilst outlet pipes were loose. Fitted serpentine belt. Refitted fan and shroud. Sucked most of the black fluid out of ABC system with brake bleeder suction tool via bleed screws, but will need further draining. Can't start engine yet waiting on some valve seals. Refitted O/S headlight ( removed for cleaning). N/S headlight, bumper and inner arches to refit after ABC valve repair.

Cheers, Dave

noise rectified

Thought I would let you all know that the noise mentioned earlier has now been rectified .... hooray. Thanks to those members who said that it could be the pulsation damper which is situated under the drivers bulkhead/foot well area. Removed damper and inserted probe ( using no pressure ) it touched the far end of the chamber thus proving that the diaphragm was kaput. Fitted new damper and hey presto no noise. thank you guys much appreciated.

buy you a beer next week.... :p

remember this question?

A while back I asked members if they could identify these items under the inner wing covers. I think I have sussed it. They are sensors that pick up the signal from the TPMS? Am I correct? Tried to find my post to follow up on it to no avail.

cheers Dave

idea's welcome

apparently the gaiters which cover the rear ABC suspension legs do NOT come separately? Can anybody think of an alternative rubber convoluted gaiter which might suffice. All I can think of is those that go over motorcycle coil springs on the front forks?
