I didn't realise they'd been out long enough to require a face lift. Strange thing is that I used to love the old 5 series and hate the new one. But now the new shape one has really grown on me and I think the old one looks, well, old.

I must say that come next spring, when the Merc really needs to go, I think I'll be looking at (not surprisingly) the new shape A6 but I will probably look at the 5 series too. Probably get a 3 year old one at quite a decent price.

Lets hope your BM dealer is a bit more careful with it when it turns up than Purslows were :D

The E60 is 3 years old next year so It will be its mid life nip and tuck. Apparently the interior trim will be different too. I still prefer the E39, (lucky for me I have one) but the 535d is a stonking car. Barons handle new cars very differently to TP I've been told. The car stays well away from the dealership right up until the last minute.

Sadly I'm unlikely to ever find out....:(

enjoy your new car Stumpy. I trust you'll still hang around the forum even though you've turned to the dark side (or seen the light, depending on your point of view)?

Stumpy cant go to the Benzworld meet now, maybe he will though just to see what he is missing out on. I would have liked to have said hello.

StevieA, I think your out of order for trying to suggest that ML420cdi is becoming obsessive, He clearly has kept a diary of events and phone calls due to the crap he has endured when buying a £40k+ car.
In my opinion this kind of detail helps others who may suffer a similar kind of crap from merc dealers.
Hope it's not a jealous streak!!!!!!!

I was taking the Michael.

The point was i suppose, that once you start pestering people they just make a fool of you when you phone lots and this has clearly happened. That is not to say that it is correct behaviour though, and the retailer was out of order. I've had similar experiences with people taking the p*ss on the phone and it is very frustrating.

What have I to be jealous about either? Doh.

I had an interesting experience with People's Ford in Bathgate. Took my Mitsubishi Spacewagon in to potentially trade against a new Galaxy. Had a test drive and then started to go through the negotiations. The saleman kept vanishing, but rather than talking to his boss was going to another desk just out of sight, and talking to salesman who was with another couple. We got fed up, and my wife decided to go over and see what was going on. Turns out he was selling our Mitsubishi to the other couple!

We marched out loudly, and the other couple twigged what was going on, and joined us. I got a note of the their phone number, and made sure that the guy knew we were off to make our own deal, and he could "get lost" so to speak.

Brazen little sod! Bought a Seat instead, and will never go to People's again.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Giffnock. My experience with them so far has been nothing short of superb, maybe it's the salesman you get. I purchased an E280cdi Sport about a month ago, after taking them about a month to source one to the spec I wanted and got a good deal overall. Infact they were that good that I went back this weekend & bought a C class coupe for my wife. :D

And this shows the whole problem with generalising about any dealer. Especially big ones. In truth, the service is often as good as the person you get on the day and may even depend on whether or not he had a row with his wife or girlfriend the night before. It should not; but we are all human. So unless we have a proper survey of a representative sample of customers it is pretty hard to make generalisations that are fair. To me one of the most irritating faults of any dealer is if you leave a message and they don't ring back. Maddening.

make sure you keep at least one or you'll miss Hogfather on Sunday. Oh hail the great Terry Pratchett....

Watched the first part of Hogfather ****** brilliant, although i thought Constable Nobby Nobbs would be more simple looking !!!!

It is amazing what they put out there from a book that is so different from the way you percieve it in your imagination when reading it!!

What sort of idiot buys a new car. Even 6 months old you can save at least 25%. Really if you want to be that silly you can always make the world's most expensive bonfire, at least then you'd be doing something origional with you money, no that's been done as well. Never mind I suppose if people like you didn't buy them then I wouldn't be able to pick them up cheap. Thank for subsidising my cars!

Thanks Biodiesel for your sensitively written post, it has added the square root of F all to this thread. If you wish to run tax exempt cars on chip fat, then good for you, but please don't take swipes at others who choose not to.

Biodiesel There are companies, individuals who work hard and play hard.
If you worked hard and your accountant said " you can have a new car,or pay £xxxxx in tax" I trust that you would pay the tax. Thank you for your way of thinking, as that off sets my tax.

Nice new member starting off by calling many members idiots. Good start!

Just so you know about 2 out of 3 new cars are bought by companies. The lease deals they do are usually carefully scrutinised to ensure good value and are not chosen by idiots. The private buyers of new cars are people who have enough money to afford the pleasure of buying brand new, without wincing too much. It is a fairly free country and if that is what gives them pleasure, why not?

You can certainly say it is more economic for private buyers to buy secondhand -I do myself now. But you cannot say only idiots buy new. It's whatever turns you on.

Try this thread to see the pleasure buying new gives some people: -
