Britain has secured assurances from the White House that the vast majority of UK citizens will be exempted from Donald Trump's immigration ban.

Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, has been told by some of Donald Trump's closest advisers that British citizens will be allowed to continue to travel from the UK to the US.

It comes after the US president provoked a backlash after signing an executive order banning people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from travelling to the US.

The Prime Minister condemned the policy and told Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, and Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, to contact their US counterparts and "fight for the rights" of British citizens.

It has now emerged that Mr Johnson has been told by some of Mr Trump's closest advisers that the ban will only apply to those flying to the US directly from the seven nations.

Mr Johnson spoke directly to Steve Bannon, the White House chief strategist, and Jared Kushner, Mr Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, in a bid to secure protections for British citizens.

The approach will exempt the majority of the hundreds of thousands of Britons with dual nationality from one of the seven countries from being hit by the ban.

Mrs May had initially refused to condemn the policy, but on Sunday the Number 10 position hardened and Mrs May instructed her ministers to negotiate with their US counterparts.

President Trump has been confronted with a global backlash over his controversial immigration order amid calls by MPs to retract the Queen's offer of a state visit to the UK.

The Government earlier criticised the measure, calling it "divisive", but the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for Mr Trump's state visit to Britain in the summer to be cancelled.


It comes as a federal judge in New York issued an emergency order temporarily barring the US from deporting people from nations subject to Mr Trump's travel ban.

Despite worldwide outrage the US president has defended the measure, insisting it is "not a Muslim ban... but is working very nicely".

Watching Trump at work is quite interesting what he releases to the press is pitched at creating a sensational headline from the media and is usually watered down later but it does present a front of we will get things done.

One anolgy I've heard that sums it up is 'management by hand grenade' what the long term results of this will be are not clear but it does get everyone's attention

It's quite clear to me that his non commital to NATO probably achieved the goal he intended as I'm quite sure TM will tell all NATO states that unless they spend 2% of GDP on defence spending America will gradually withdraw it's support so you could say job done on that count

It's going to be an interesting 4 years and he certainly lets you know he's coming the press have never had it do good

Its a good point... they could in theory build a platform with stairs every couple of hundred yards on their side of their wall (after all - they are paying for it....) .
Then every few hundred yards set up abseil ropes to dangle over the US side from time to time....

In addition to all of that, I'm hearing a lot of noise across the pond along the lines of:

1. Significant (multi-tens-of-thousands dollar) fines for each illegal immigrant found working for a business.
2. Much active consultation on how to make the USA less attractive to non-visa holders.

In short, a pincer movement or encirclement: "make it harder for them to get here, and make it much less attractive for them to come in the first place".

There's some pretty intense rumors that a change in leadership in Syria is imminent.
Bashar al-Assad is supposedly ill, perhaps terminally, and the rumors suggest that his younger brother Maher will take his place.

These rumors accelerated this morning as a large amount of Russian MPs appeared in Damascus. The presumption then being that their presence is in case there is an attempted insurrection or coup during the handover process.

Maher has built up a reputation as a particularly ruthless individual in his role as commander of the 4th Armored Division. He is generally considered as more widely hated than Bashar among the Syrians.
However, he is likely a suitable puppet dictator as far as Moscow is concerned.

[edit] Reports now starting to spread in mainstream media that Bashar has had a stroke. The regime denies. It's hard to tell what's true and not.
The latest I've seen - from a Russian source - is that Russian doctors have treated him for something at a hospital and that his condition may have improved somewhat.
Damascus was sealed off for travel late in the evening, no entry/exit.

Carl, there is intense speculation on whether the "stroke" is of the 7.62mm or 9mm variety

The majority of the wealthy and the elite just enjoy life at the top and ignore the gross overcrowding of the "wrong" kind of people in their country. The key fact in "Brexit" was to try and stop the situation, and the elite called the out voters racists.

Have you ever seen the TV program where the Immigration service raid places like a big Halal butcher etc. It seems to me that almost every 'illegal' they find is released and told to report to a centre, upon which they disappear to dod the same thing all over again.

I somehow don't think it will be the same in USA.

Yes I've seen the like, and that's pretty deliberately so because we don't have the political will to rigidly enforce that kind of policy.

Right, so this time the illegals are shackled, put on a prisoner transport bus, processed, finger prints and other biometric data collected, and forcibly returned to Mexico.

Tunnels already exist. Ciudad Jiuarez/ El Paso for one example. I've been told that it is entirely possible there for a married couple to be in bed where each of them is legally in a different country to the other.

The tunnels exist, they're linked through the sewer network and the USBP knows all about them. Something like 40% of illegal volume passes through these types of tunnel in about 4 locations; there are multiple towns that straddle the border. The image of illegals straggling across hundreds of miles of desert is much more the type painted by media.
