will there be a dyno session soon Malcolm. just to verify that you've had the most out of the mods?

That was quick getting it in Malcolm!
My local guy is booked months ahead... (But then he is good and he's cheap too).

£250 for this work, I guess that are having a quiet time

This is the same answer as on the noise thread.

I had my X pipe fitted today, all done for £250 including some new pipe work.

And how did it go. When I got the car back after selling it, the CATs were gone and just pipes. The car did make much more noise in the car that what I could remember, and yes it did seem quicker. My car is a grand tourer, not a true sports car, it could cover huge mileages in a day in excess of 1200 miles in total comfort.

After the X pipe was fitted, the instant change was how smooth and quiet it was, well my head is telling me that it cannot be slower, that was for sure. Traffic was very busy on the A35, but the chance came to try it, once passed the 3k RPM it took off, and went well .

So what is claimed for the X pipe is true, the car is just so much nicer to drive, just so smooth and quiet, then as the RPM go up it really comes into effect.

As it was the exhaust was all one lump. this has been split now at the rear boxes, where the pipes were flattened a little to pass through the support changed giving a full flow.

I am so grateful to members helping me on this one, that X box is gust very nice to have.

Malcolm is it an X-Box or an X-pipe ?

I do not know, its the X thing that joins the 2 pipes as near to the down pipes as possible. :D:D

February 22nd in my case....

Phwooar, you have to let me know how it goes... I'd like to remove secondary cats, add in an X pipe and have the car tuned. I reckon it's good for about 30 horses and 40-50 torques from Malcolm's numbers.

Yeah will do Craig. I've still got my secondary cats but the back boxes have had all the unnecessary stuff removed and larger bore pipes in...sounds like a V8 now without too much drone. Only other thing I've done is fit K&N filters so the engine breathes nicely. So the stage 1 remap is the only meaningful thing left on a normally aspirated engine. With luck and a following wind I might have increased the 382 up to 430 BHP, but as I've said elsewhere it's how it drives rather than comparing numbers that interests me more...

I think our cars already have an x pipe of sorts fitted. In any case both front pipes after the cats come together into a "box" and then exit separately to the rear silencers.

Ah is that so? I've never seen the underside on the ramp except for when the diff assy came out.

Hmm. More thinking needed. I understood that the whole powertrain complete was pretty much identical between 220, 215 and 230.

It might be a resonator...I haven't had a definitive answer yet. If it is then an X-Pipe could replace it and release more...erm...sound.

I noticed that on a schematic of the SL's exhaust. Is it an x-pipe or just a section welded together for rigidity?

That does look like an X-Pipe in the parts diagram. Its a long way back compared to most though!
