The only thing managed tonight was engine turning over which was fine, hopefully a runner by Monday and now that I am an expert youtuber I will video it!

ebay, break it and use the money to fund a more viable project - you'll learn how to pull them apart too

I think the parts availability for your project choice should be a significant factor.

but the forum is full of people who are having a nightmare getting spares out of Merc at the moment. Some items for Mercs of around this vintage are not even manufactured any more.

UK law is that parts availability must exist for 7 years from manufacture.... after that they can just give up....

in japan its 3 years

with the sick turn over in model cycles and the mad world of 17 versions of a 3 series, plus a 2 and a 4 series and an annual facelift (all the same car but with different body panels, bumpers lights, trims) and the fact its now all the suppliers responsibility to maintain stock - u can just imagine how many cars will be unviable before its left the showroom and almost certainly before the warranty ends

I am happy to spend on it, I absolutely want to restore it, it's not a financial investment at all I get that, just don't want to see it scrapped. Might be of a different opinion next year!

For such a car, source of parts is cars being broken and dealers (based on budget).

OP lovely project. this time next year, roof down, cruising.

Good morning, I have just joined the forum in the hope of some practical advice. My knowledge of cars is very limited & I do not have a great skill set, however approaching retirement the thought of golfing or bowling is just not for me! With this in mind I made the decision to buy a car in need of restoration, probably bit off more than I can chew but just love the idea of being able to go to my garage and tinker around, the problem is I have no idea where to start, some pictures attached & all View attachment 85552 comments welcome. It has 46,000 miles, full service history till 2019, new roof 2018. There is a new starter motor in the boot & it needs a battery. View attachment 85551 View attachment 85552
I feel for you!

My first move would be to get the car onto bricks and go in search of rust underneath - you have to stop the rust and seal everything underneath with paint (preferably a paint containing Zinc). Remove all the underside covers and put to one side until entire car is restored. Pay particular attention to suspension sub frames. Look for any corroded pipes and brake pipes under there.

Yes onto bricks for your safety - see photo

The front bricks are a wedge - even an additional axle stand at the back for OTT security

Then with car back on ground do each wheel arch in turn, hydraulic jack and axle stands ok for this but be sure to guarantee your safety.

Then professional job for dealing with the exterior bodywork rust problems.

Next all the electrics and mechanics. You will need a new battery of course - don't let your new battery stay discharged (less than 12.4 Volts) while work progresses.

If you have a 722.6 automatic transmission get back to me later on I can help you with that. As a minimum it will need ATF and filter change.

Glad you have the petrol engine. First thing (before starting) change the oil then after starting change the oil then do an oil change soon thereafter.

Expect one or two pulleys driven by the serpentine belt to be noisy, see threads on this, check that the Alternator pulley (Alternator Overrun Pulley) is freewheeling properly. Change the power steering fluid.

:)

This is a good attitude. Keep the car. Allow no worries as regards time scale to restore.

The car cost me £300 so I am not particularly worried about how much I spend on it,
Incredible value for £300, even just the transmission controller ( a PCB in a plastic box) costs about that.

People generally have little or no appreciation for the value of engineering. Same goes for respect, the engineering in a car like this is worthy of much respect.

Good luck to you and enjoy yourself maybe you have some similar minded mates who would muck in with you?

It would make a much better project and be easier.

The girl in the shortest of shorts and tight t-shirt so beloved by tool calendars is a bit distracting.
