Picked up the SL after it's B service, just 2x advisories, first was it needs 2x Air Filters, I said but that is part of the B service isn't it? They said yes but they only had 1x in stock so they have ordered more and could I return to have them fitted!

The 2nd is "they found evidence of a rodent infestation", I was astounded as the car is a daily driver and not garaged. Apparently no visible damage to the engine or electrics but "I should buy some traps". I am guessing this must be old evidence from previous ownership as the car is left on a driveway and as posted earlier plenty of local cats around

Used to happen with my Dad's daily driver, the mouse used to wait until the car came home then climb up into the bonnet and have a nice warm bed for the night. Traps on top of the engine got the little blighter eventually.

As much as I like cats, I love my car more. I’m afraid the cat would have met with a high speed, boot - rump interface, regardless, as punishment for daring to “mark” my car.

A “kinder” and infinitely more effective is a clear spray we got to deter our kitten from lying on the Dynaudio Center speak. He like to lie on it, stare up at the telly and when bored pluck the black mesh grill! :(

Just sprayed some of this in a tiny stainless steel dish, and he gave it a four foot berth.

To solve your problem just spray some on the driveway.

Sorry dont know what the name was.

Wonder if I can trap the local moggy in the engine bay, both issues resolved.

Cats don't stop mice, they just have fun with them.

Mice breed roughly once every 4 weeks for a typical litter size of 6. They live for an average of 12 months if outdoors.

If every litter produces another litter every 4 weeks, a mating pair at the start of the year will end up with a family of 464 at the end of the year... assuming that the litters don't die/ aren't killed while still very young. Seeing as mice can live in incredibly small spaces- they can get through a hole 5mm wide!- it's really difficult to kill them in numbers, because they can just hide.

An American university did the following study on domestic cats- how much do they actually kill?

One in three cats killed prey.
Of these they averaged two kills per week.

So you need three cats to kill two things- not always mice- per week. That means that to keep down a single breeding pair of mice, you would need to maintain 14 cats (every 3-cat flotilla or squadron can take care of 104 mice per year).

Go onto Amazon and buy some Vebicolla. Mouse glue. Its great, if somewhat distressing to the wimminz. Keep a bucket of water nearby for drowning purposes.

Oh no, not drowning sir, horrible way to go. I came close once and speak from personal experience. Keep a hammer close by, sharp tap on the head and it’s all over very quickly.

Think I've worked it out, all seemed very strange to me as we have never had a rodent problem in or around the house or in any previous cars, also it has been hot here so unlike Winter there was nothing to attract them to the engine. Then I remembered our recent (July) vacation to rural Scotland, it was cold at night and the car was parked up for a week (only driven twice for a few miles) as we had the Polo as our 4 seater.

Think we had a weee Scottish mouse.

Took the paddle switches apart so I could clean them with contact cleaner.

Now up my up button is reliable! Better than £200 each from MB.

Dropped it off at the painter to get the damaged wing sorted and while he's at it he's doing the driver's side sill too.
Thanks to GLK for picking me up and dropping me home .
