Summers won't work all year , especially as he lives in Scotland , there will be days where his rear wheel drive car can't move . I take your point about summers , but it depends how important those "few" snow days are with work/commitments .

Oh yes they do, but you need full rev's and heaps of fuel :p

I used to use them on my Smart Roadster (Toyos). They were definitely better on snow and ice than the Toyo summers but not by a huge amount. When they wore out I didn't replace them (the last two are still behind the shed I think).
Some people compare the driveability to having a 4x4 - I certainly never found that it compared at all to the 4x4s I used to have.
Much also depends on the summer tyre being compared to. The Goodyears on the 230 are rubbish as soon as the temperature drops. The RS3s on the otherhand are still very capable even below zero, only really having issues on sheet ice or deeper snow.

My tyre judgement is much simpler , the hill where I live is never gritted or cleared of ice or snow .
It's just a case of winter tyres the car gets up the hill , summer tyres it doesn't .(At least for both my rear wheel drive MB's ) . Less important now I'm retired I'll admit .
I've got a spare set of winters for each car and I enjoy the changeover , it's a good time to check brakes twice a year .

My previous tyres went to around 2mm before I changed, since fitting the RS3 they feel better already, even when it is this cold there is a lot less slip/spin.

I've never used winter tyres in more than 40 years of driving but I don't live in Scotland. Personally I wouldn't buy all season tyres due to being a compromised tyre but I live in Hertfordshire where generally we only get about a month of cold wintery weather, the rest of the time a summer tyre beats an all season tyre in every test.

I don't care about cost effective, all I'm interested in is keeping mine dent free and on the road.
Sadly, as I found out two years ago, sometimes it's not even your fault, as in, when someone runs into you.:rolleyes:

Talk about tempting fate and being prophetic.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Today on my way to work Mama Deer, Papa Deer, and Jnr. Deer tried to eliminate themselves in what was obviously, a suicide pact.

As I drove down a narrow lane, I happened to notice in my peripheral vision, something moving fast through the trees towards the road.
I immediately jumped on the brakes and stopped just in time as Mama and Papa deer burst through a gap in said trees, right across the road in front of me. Luckily I missed them both. (It's a bug**r trying to get blood off of the paint).

Bambi obviously couldn't have made his appointment at Spec Savers though, as, running about five metres behind Mom and Pop he didn't see my bl**dy big Silver Mercedes and promptly ran straight into the n/s/f wing and door. Leaving me with a rather hefty repair bill, and a nice coating of hair/fur.:mad::mad:

I've a cheek to call him Bambi, he was only a hand smaller than Mom at the most. :p

My passenger door now can't be opened without causing the two edges to grate against one another which causes all the paint on the leading edges to rub together. I'd rather not give the bodyshop and painter more work / problems to deal with if I can avoid it. So, it'll be staying shut until it goes in for repair on Monday.

I wonder if the beggars were insured?:rolleyes:

I suppose I shouldn't really complain too much, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

First year I've fitted winters, as I've had a FWD Golf for my daily, for the last 10 or so, years.

I'm impressed with them. No idiot lights on the dash, over the last couple of days of commuting on single carriageway roads, where others have struggled with the conditions.

I'm converted.

Indeedy! Before the various Mercs, I had a [coughs] BM* 123d which was on wide section run-flats, it was utterly useless on even the faintest whiff of white fluffy stuff. Just after that, I had an S2000 and that wasn't much better!

A decent PDR specialist should be able to sort that out no problems. Gutted for you.

Glad you're not hurt and it sounds like Bambi survived too. I think your conviction that winter tyres are necessary in Ayrshire is proven. Slippery summers would surely have taken out a couple of larger beasts, made Bambi an orphan and left more of your favourite panels lumpy. Hope it isn't too costly.

That’s awful for you and so sorry to see your poor car. I suppose if you hadn’t been concentrating and driving so well, you might have wiped out the whole family and done a lot more damage to the car so well done for the anticipation.

Oh well, I've been toying with the idea of removing the chrome detail trim strips for a while and this will provide the perfect excuse. No doubt they will cost an arm and a leg to replace anyway, commensurate with the brand costs of course.:rolleyes:

Bambi defo survived, he was off like a shot before I'd even gotten out of the car. I turned around and he was gone. (Mom and Pop must have given him a shout). ;)

Glad everyone's OK, including the deer. :)

It could indeed, could have been John Deere...
