No I just use a higher spec oil than 229.51 and change silly early miles every 6 months.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. As Gazwould says just use a higher spec oil, it will save the filters and everything else clogging up with that stuff  If it was any good it would be in the oil in the first place surely

good synthetic oil to manu spec changed at correct intervals, with proper branded fuel = job done

the reason your works I because you are using it a lot..... cold starts / lots of start stops, are the killer of engines and exhausts

It is not beyond the wit of man to think someone makes better oil or an additive that improves standard oil the huge problem is sorting out the snake oil.

The products are sold with great marketing zeal probably only outstripped by the cosmetic industry with their anti-oxidising pro retinol anti wrinkle drivel.

I have no idea which is good and which is bad.

But like the cosmetic industry some appear to do something.

Tons of marketing .

It's all very simple , oil basestocks in groups , our concern is 3 to 5 , industry standards not a case one producer is better than the other.

The two later are actual synthetics .

Next is the additive package , detergents , dispersants , anti oxidants , friction modifiers etc .

The crack is finding which manufacturer oil spec contains the best basestock groups and higher contraction additive package , a LongLife oil is highly favoured because to last long it has the highest ingredients .

So an aftermarket additive could well be just that or some well packaged tosh just like the cosmetics.
The trouble is we aren't chemists with labs.

There's a balance too highlighted earlier , more for instance ZDDP doesn't mean better.

Think of oil as a recipe.
A good cake recipe might specify 2 eggs. Do you get a better cake if you add 6 eggs?

My Mum used 6 egg's in her sponge cake, Mmmm, mouth watering and very tendery sponge like with raspberry and cream filled centre Yummmy
