There have been a few reports of chain tensioner failures which can cause the chain to jump and this damage to occur.

Another good reason to turn stop/start off every journey

Has it had any work on cam followers/cam.? Seen this before that it’s not been timed up correctly. The chain doesn’t directly drive the cams, it drives an idler gear.
I bought it second hand and I have not done any engine work on it. Only changed ad blue pumped when that failed.

Seen a few now, in the middle of one as we speak, it didn’t snap tho. I’d be supprised if it hasn’t bent a valve.

Interesting thread as these cars are now covering enough miles to show up common problems...what mileage have these vehicles covered?

How’s the job as it’s rear of the engine?

Not too bad, once stripped top down, you can feed it round providing gears and rail ok. I’ll take a vid of worn chain if I get a chance. Not as easy as a 651 engine.

What sort of life has it had out of interest? Motorway miles? Around town? Full service history? (Just asking as another 220d owner!)

92k isn't a lot for a chain to be letting go jan but if its got stop/start then I guess its will be under more strain , id still expect it to do 150k without any issues though

Mostly around town. Full history. Ad blue tank had gone needed replacing, nox sensor went at 70.

My stop/start stopped working long time ago I didn't even get round to wondering why. And I thought the chain would never go.

Usually low battery stops the system working pal
My battery was crap after 4 years (2016 plate as well). Bembo449 Yeah, I appreciate a chain should last a lot longer. Just the reliability of this E class and Mercedes after sales service is crap haha

This must have had a rattle on start up a way before the chain snapped. I would likely say the chain tensioner was at fault and over tentioned the chain as opposed to an outright chain failure. I have seen this on the OM642 BE engine, the 651 and 654.
