I still use them same gloves now, as i did when i worked in the dealer network, only difference is now, my overalls as we speak are in the washing machine having a boil wash!!!!

I think in the long run I need to find a good Independent (like you) in my part of the world. Do you know of anyone around Huddersfield / Wakefield / Leeds ?

Thanks for suggestions. I have googled for Merc specialists and found this local place:

http://www.delaceys.co.uk/

I have also searched the forum and it appears that my local MB dealer 'Stratstone' are heavily into haggling! So I will start by asking for a 50% reduction..........

If Stratstone are anything like their branches around here, you would be as well giving your car to the local primary school & letting the 5 year old kids fix it.

Sell what? Do you mean they are going to sell the MB dealership?

Update:
I have just spent a couple of minutes on the phone talking to MB warranty services. The claims advisors do not work weekend and the very helpful nice sales person I spoke to gave me another number to call on Monday. They also looked through Tier 1 warranty policy for me and confirmed that as far as they can see all oil seals and gearbox seals are covered.
I am a bit undecided as to how far I should pursue this because on the one hand I think £186 is not a big expense and maybe I should just cough up and get the work done BUT on the other hand I think ... wait a minute ... I have bought this car only 4 months ago from an MB main dealer with 12 months warranty. There is nothing that I have done in the past 4 months to cause the gearbox sump to leak and it is not even a service item as far as I know. In anycase this car has been 100% serviced at Mercedes South Lakes for its entire life..... and surely any issues like this should have been rectified. So why should I pay??

They have been busy selling of major sites to pay down debt which spiralled during the boom years.

If the MB franchise goes it will leave them pretty thin in the high end sector.

Exactly.
I wouldn't pay a penny of a cost that should be covered by a warranty policy.

Update 2

OK today I had first some bad news followed by some good! I phoned the warranty claims department lunch time. I spoke to a claims advisor who told me that I hadn't read the small print in detail and that although a lot of engine and gearbox seals are covered the gearbox sump seal definitely is not! Oddly the seals that need the engine to be taken out to replace are covered but others that are easier to get to are not! This doesn't make sense to me but that's the way it is.

I then phoned my local dealer and ended up speaking to another person in the service department whom I again asked for my copy of pre-sale inspection report which they had not supplied when they sold me the car 4 months ago. I asked for this again because I am sure the gearbox leak must have been there when I bought the car and had the dealer carried out the inspection it would have been on the report. They said they will call me back. Later in the afternoon I did get a call and sure enough they are now going to do the work FOC and will include the filter change as well as the ATF.:D

Now I think that the inspection not being carried out is possibly a genuine mistake (oversight) which was not helped by the fact that this dealer actually got the car for me from the South Lakes dealer. However I am glad that I did insist on seeing this report which I think helped focus their mind! So my car is now booked in next week for the work to be carried out.

Thanks again for all the advice I received on this forum.

Malcolm I quized them again as to where the leak is and they say it is definitely from the sump seal and due to 'fair tear and wear'!

Edit: or even 'wear and tear'!!

There is no fair wear and tear on the gasket, as Colin said he has never seen one that has leaked,,maybe a few sump screws loose or never tightened correctly.

I would love to know if you have fluid in the ECU and loom

As Malc above, if it fitted correctly and all the bolt are tighten as they should be, then how can a rubber gasket leak, Sarahs car (Missy D) has never had, as far as i can see from the records, a gearbox oil and filter change, that has done 140000 miles in 20 years and is still dry!!!!! hence i have to do it now!!!!!!

This leak must be very minute because I have had the car 4 months and am sure leak must have been there when I bought the car. Yet the car showed no obvious symptoms of low ATF. Gear changes are smooth except on a cold day before engine warmed up when there was slight jerkyness (only sometimes). I am going to take a look if we get a dry day! (don't fancy crawling under the car when damp!)

How do we find out about oil in the ECU? Do I need to ask them to check this when it is in the dealers next week?
