Going along our wonderful roads there is a knock out multiple knocks from the front which I think is the arb links but I can't reproduce the noise by hitting them with a Thor mallet. Any tips for identifying the source?

I disagree; the fluid coming out of the cooler stops after 2l because the sump is empty. You add 2l clean fluid and that gets pumped etc. But, hey, each to his own.
Couple of checks at home... At 4A the alternator may feel warm. You could also try disconnecting the alternator, after first disconnecting the battery. Then reconnect the battery and see if the current has dropped to a low value
I took my W211 to an aircon specialist when cooling was intermittent. He explained that problem was with a valve on the compressor, so, while thinking, DIY; replace the valve; but then, practicality..... I'd have to get the system drained, replace valve (assuming availability) get regassed.
