c220 cdi lacking power

Hello to all. I have just been to see, and test drive, my first Mercedes today! It was a C220 cdi Estate. The car seems about as genuine as you can expect, and drove beautifully. However, it did have a very noticable 'flat-spot' when trying to accelerate, particularly whilst in 2nd gear...
