Greetings all
You might remember my recent query about whether my 140k mile well-maintained 2004 S320L cdi needed a DPF ‘clean’ due to (IMHO) excessive exhaust smoke under occasional hard acceleration. Thanks for reminding me that it doesn’t have a DPF so that wasn’t the issue. Duuuggghhh..!
But a couple of you suggested using a diesel fuel additive or a Premium / albeit more expensive (not Regular) grade diesel fuel to help clean the injectors etc. And / or giving the car a FAST RUN to clear out the cobwebs.
So... I filled-up with UK branded BP ‘Ultimate / Active technology’ B7 diesel fuel last week, drove the car around town gently for a few days and today ‘BOOTED IT’ right up to the red line (4500-5000 rpm) in 2nd & 3rd gears on an open road - which I rarely do. . [Note: but safely and within the prevailing National Speed Limits].
The Result? Hey Presto! I swear that the exhaust smoke was far less dense, and clearer than before. And.. my otherwise lazy / high torque at low revs 3.2 cdi engine seemed to enjoy being stretched more than normal - as did I.
My Conclusion? Modern engines (whether petrol or diesel / W220 / of any capacity) need both the Best Quality fuel AND a good ‘STRETCH…’ regularly to clear out the cobwebs and maintain peak performance & efficiency?
Thanks as always for following, and your helpful input too.
