Greetings all

You might remember my recent query about whether my 140k mile well-maintained 2004 S320L cdi needed a DPF ‘clean’ due to (IMHO) excessive exhaust smoke under occasional hard acceleration. Thanks for reminding me that it doesn’t have a DPF so that wasn’t the issue. Duuuggghhh..!

But a couple of you suggested using a diesel fuel additive or a Premium / albeit more expensive (not Regular) grade diesel fuel to help clean the injectors etc. And / or giving the car a FAST RUN to clear out the cobwebs.

So... I filled-up with UK branded BP ‘Ultimate / Active technology’ B7 diesel fuel last week, drove the car around town gently for a few days and today ‘BOOTED IT’ right up to the red line (4500-5000 rpm) in 2nd & 3rd gears on an open road - which I rarely do. o_O:eek:. [Note: but safely and within the prevailing National Speed Limits].

The Result? Hey Presto! I swear that the exhaust smoke was far less dense, and clearer than before. And.. my otherwise lazy / high torque at low revs 3.2 cdi engine seemed to enjoy being stretched more than normal - as did I. :D

My Conclusion? Modern engines (whether petrol or diesel / W220 / of any capacity) need both the Best Quality fuel AND a good ‘STRETCH…’ regularly to clear out the cobwebs and maintain peak performance & efficiency?

Thanks as always for following, and your helpful input too. ;)

MB

Add this - 2EHN - to your normal diesel and it makes it the same cetane as premium diesel at a fraction of the cost.

I've at the moment a full tank of fuel with 100 MLS of 2ehn , 500 MLS of dipetane and a bottle of red ex . I've seen blue tits and butterflies nestling on my tail pipes for a little drink of moisture .

I do 60ml of 2ehn for 33l in the smart car, and it increases mpg by 5-6 mpg in the winter months, than without.

That's not a lot better than my Roadster used to average (typically 49mpg) and with the cost difference between diesel and petrol would make the roadster cheaper to fuel!

It’s spent most of its life doing commuting through town with lots of stopping and starting.
Whilst my SLK is averaging just over 32mpg for ~70K miles that’s been much more open road work.

I’m switching between them now and will see how they both compare on the 52 mile round trip commute I’m doing.
