I am furious.
After light use, my 3 yo Sprinter based motorhome has had its two “nox” sensors - whatever they are - replaced.
To add further insult to injury, my issue has happenned at the start of a longstay vacation in Spain.
The engine light displayed when the engine was first started and then disappeared after 30 seconds. Performance was not impaired at all.
Following handbook advice, I took it to a local MB dealership workshop and expected it to be the usual glitch requiring a diagnostics override.
To my horror, they informed me that the two sensors controlling the emissions required replacement and frightened me enough to agree to the work in view of our holiday. They said that MB would pay half of the €1475 cost and I had to pay the €740.
Apart from my disgust at the failure of vital components on an allegedly indestructible engine I cannot help but feel that they have overkilled what seemed like a simple solution. Even the diagnostics tests have been individually billed on a per test basis. I have always paid for one-covers-all test on my other non MB diagnostics.
Does anyone think that I may have a case against MB to reclaim my 50% share? The technician that I spoke to at the workshop told me that these sensors do fail regularly. Hardly what I thought I was purchasing when I selected a MB base vehicle for my motorhome.
Also, being an emissions based issue I wonder whether MB are overcompensating due to “guilt” issues in view of the current scandal. Is there any way which I could have these sensors deactivated?
Thanks.
