Hi

I Think i may be in big trouble, i have a 00 E320 cdi est with 63,000 miles on clock. i am experiencing loss of power, when i press the kick down, the car will not go over 2500 revs, however it somtimes will on cold mornings. I service the car with a local independent service garage, their computer is not showing a problem, they reccommend me to contact a dealership. They tell me it is probably a cat problem, but they will not know untill they have a look at the car. my own guy tells me not to worry as he thinks it is a simple reset problem, am i in trouble !!!

There are a number of stories about cats breaking up internally and the debris blocking the exhaust. That can cause the symtoms you describe. It runs fine until the flow gets high enough to lift the debris (kick down) and block the pipe. I assume your mechanic has checked the MAS and any other safe mode issues. I can't think of any reset type problem as the systems generally reset themselves each time you start the engine.

I know it sounds unlikely but I would check the condition of the battery. If its the original it will be nearing the end of its useful life and can cause partial shutdown of the cars electrical systems if faulty or undercurrent.

I had a problem with the CC on my 320 and it turned out to be the battery, the CC would not set after initial start up in the morning but would set after the charging system had replaced the power in the battery.

If you decide to change the battery if faulty make sure you fit a good brand.

I have a similar problem, identical symptoms including it being fine on a cold day. Garage last Nov said there was either an air filter problem or Air sensor [MAF]. The air filter was due for replacement so that was done anyway. The MAF is on order. My exhaust was replaced at about 65k after an argument with MB over them calling a failure at 4k as being wear and tear. I still have the original battery and all seems fine electrically.

Does your temperature gauge read ok?

In my clk 230 k, I was told the same about Catalytic converter as well, that it might be internally broken and thats why it blocks the pipe. SO i changed the ctalytic converter. As when you touch it, it gave the sound as something is broken inside. So I got a good deal on the catalytic converter from an online shops. about £400 less then the dealer price. And then I was also told that maybe the middle and back box has got debris in it so its better to change it. Even after changing that , the car runs very light but still I am having loss of power. I have even changed Mass air flow as well. I personally think its to do with fuel filter as not enough fuel seems to be going. but the garage doesnt agree with me as he thinks its the "recirculating air flap actuator". So I guess the loss of power isnt entirely dependent on the exhaust or air intake!!

Thanks to all for advice and help on this, i will be booking the car in today for a diagnostic report from a main dealer.
Main dealers in ireland have a 3 week waiting list as their workshops are booked out with problems on new models..
i will sleep easier now while waiting for the diagnostic report as the odds seem to be moving away from a Cat problem, also no problems re temps.

Did you ever get this sorted? I have just bought a 2000 MY with 63K miles and have exactly the same problem.
