My car is in for the second service, its done about 25k miles. They are replacing the front pads at a cost of £250 and say the Discs are on their last legs 1mm to go. Is it usual for Discs to be replaced inside 2 years? They want £1000 to change the front discs which I'm not going to do immediatily.

Normally discs last twice as long as the pads so if your pads are lasting 25K then the discs should last 50K. I also cannot believe the prices they are asking. I would buy the pads and discs from MB and fit them myself or have them fitted elsewhere. I would also ask to see the measurement of the disc.

Hi I not sure how thick new discs are lets say X + 3mm
so 50K / 3mm = 16k miles to go, I can get front pads for £25.00

sorry but you have to expect it with a 4+4, my c320 lasted 34000 before new disks and thats half the wieght of a ml, so i think thats not bad, the old 163 ml was well known for disks and pads, it come with owning these cars, there a heavy car and being auto your only using the brakes, i think thats what you should expect!

Thanks Guys, Had the Pads replaced, I think I will get the discs done elsewhere when the time comes. I assume the Warranty will be fine if I use MB spares?

To require new discs after only 25k is not 'normal', my opinion is that the steel used in the manufacture of the discs must be too soft and i would be pursuing MB for some 'goodwill' towards replacements.

As has been said, discs should last 2 sets of pads. I disagree with comments about heavy wear and heavy braking on the basis that this wouldn't affect the disc to pad wear ratio. Sure you'd get less mileage out of the discs, but you wouldn't get 25k from a set of pads either. As you did, I'd be tempted to call the dealer's bluff. I'd ask them to make a warranty claim for premature disk failure. After all, that's what they're telling you has happened. I suspect they'll make some excuse as it sounds like cobblers to me and I suspect in 12k they'll tell you they're ok but almost shot and in 25k they'll say they need replacing with the pads....
