09/2002 CLK320 W209
I am a new member and I have just bought my first Mercedes after 56 years of driving. A 09/2002 CLK320 W209, one owner, FSH ( MB and Indie ) 51,000 genuine miles and I love it. Everything works except two electronic things, of course. The central locking is somewhat intermittent, it works with the key fob maybe once in fifty times. It unlocks and locks fine with the emergency key and the central locking works fine from the switch on the dash. I have changed the batteries in both key fobs and checked all the fuses that have anything to do with the central locking and alarm and everything is good. I have also reset the key fob as per the manual, and it works a couple of times then stops. Does anybody have any ideas?
Also the the steering column adjust works in and out but will not go up or down?

I would appreciate any help anyone can give.
Thanks,
Michael.

Thanks Wighty. The locks seem fine, they pop up and down as they should with the dash locking switch. I think I may take it to my local MB Indie garage and get them to put it on the Star.
Will post some pics as soon as I can. Thanks. Michael.

Welcome I had a 2001 CLK200K, a very reliable car.
Just check you can unlock the boot manually with the key. The battery is in the boot & if that goes flat thats the only way in to get to the battery.
I seem to remember the steering wheel adjust was manual. Release the lock & push/pull, or up/down the other way. Or is the 320 on electric motors?

Hi folks,
I'm also a new member and I love anything MB. I'm also a first time driver and looking to get my first car. Because everyone has advised me to get a "banger" as a first car I thought it best to start with a CLK (and why not?). I would appreciate any advice on whether it's a good choice (I presume it is ) and any recommendations are also welcomed.
Oh! In case you are wondering, I'm a 40yr old guy who has no time for speeding crazily around town (give it time ) so I'll definitely take care of it rather than trash it.
I humbly await the wise comments from the sages on this forum.

Hello Michael and Banku - and welcome! :)

Michael, strange to see a 2002 is a w209 when they only started in 2003....??? A 2002 should still be a w208. But hey, stranger things have happened.
I have had 4 CLK w208's. Three 320's and a 430. These are fantastic cars and are extremely reliable - and just as reliable to be rusty! (Mostly).

Not too sure if the w209 has electric solenoid operated Door Locks - I think they did. I know the w208 has Air Assisted ones operated by the PSE Pump in the Boot. If yours are Air Operated maybe the Pump is on it's way out. Bit to me if they work 100% from the interior Universal Lock/Unlock then it sounds like a Communication issue with the Key and Module.

Hi Banku - You cannot go too wrong with the CLK - I personally rate the w208 over the w209.

Good luck and happy motoring! ;)

Thanks for the welcome and advice @RhodieBill. What years did the W208 and W209 models cover please? I'm still learning about all these things!

Hi RhodieBill, yes it's an October 2002, so it's the 2003 model, which is a W209 and it is all electric (I think). It's strange because if I take it out and do 20 or 30 miles and then bring it back, the central locking works from the key fine. If I leave it for a few days without driving it, it stops working from the key. Almost new car battery and new batteries in the key fob. So bit of a head scratcher. Maybe the alarm batteries losing charge, would that affect it? You are right though that 3.2 V6 is a beautiful engine. Cheers, Michael.

That is a weird one, re the Central Locking. Best thing is to get it put on a Diagnostic.

How would I know if mine is a W208 or W209 as mine is a very late model 2002, as I know the next year model usually comes out late the year before?

Sorry to jump in a bit late. Vin with WDB209 is the 209 model. Oh and a belated welcome from a fellow 209 member. I've always liked the 209 but have only recently purchased mine, a 220 diesel. Lovely car but the 320 v6 is a nice choice with that silky smooth v6 petrol lump.
