Hi gents, can anyone tell me how much play is acceptable for MOT on the steering, my car has approx 1" either side of centre, but when the car is jacked up the steering does move, please help.

An inch is the very maximum. If the vehicle is fitted with compensating steering the test for play should be done with the engine running. If it is a bo standrad mechanical steering box there will be an adjustment screw on the top of the box. Unfortunately, if it hasn't ever been adjusted then there is the chance that the wear has accelerated past the point of adjustment. If so adjust it up to the max and check the condition of your steering dampener. Replacing this can dramatically improve things.

Otherwise consider reconditioning the steering box. Don't bother buying an alledged reconditioned unit. As long as they have no more play the 1" on the steering wheel they can be ligitamately sold as fit for purpose. Effectively, they take your box paint is shiny black and give it back to you for the pricely sum of £450.

I have a similar problem but with a smaller amount of play. I had a look at the steering box yesterday and this screw looks pretty difficult to access. How do you get to it?
Do you work from the top of the engine or work from underneath? Do you need to remove any other parts to access this?
I think I can feel this screw but cannot see it. Is it an Allen head screw with a Hex head locking nut?
Any help from an experienced hand would be appreciated.

107 steering niggles

Hi,
I have replaced the steering damper this week and it hasn`t made too much difference, all that i do reckon is that the steering might feel slightly firmer, but i still have a bit of play, which im not overlly worried about, the car did pass its MOT last weeek with flying colours, but i will look into seeing if the adjustment on top of the steering box will take the play out.

Thanks Tony
