Hi - Does anyone have an exploded diagram showing the wiper linkage on a 1981 380sl please? Mine has seized and I'm very reluctant to start removing the entire dash!
Thanks, Dylan

Ah ha!

Thanks for the diagram Myros. It has shown me what I can't see!

However, just 5 minutes ago I have fixed the issue WITHOUT removing the dash! Anyone out there about to undertake this hideous task, stop!!

The answer to anyone finding their wipers seized is to first disengage the linkage from the motor - an easy task for a RHD car by accessing through the glove box. Next remove the wiper arms, and the circlip & washers behind them. I also removed the larger nuts but not sure if this is nessesary. Over a period of days apply WD40 or a similar penetrating oil in the area and use a pin to scrape corrosion from between the spline shaft and the collar which goes through the bulkhead. Each day grip the spline shafts with some mole grips & wiggle until you get movement. Mine took about 3 days, and once they start moving they will soon be free. Add more WD40!! Obviously you need to be carefull not to knacker the splines with the mole grips, but a small file can repair most marks.
Maybe this is not suitable for concourse examples of the 107, but I'm damn glad I didn't remove the dash as I'm sure I'd cause more damage than I fixed!

Wiper problem

My '86 500 SL has the same problem with wipers seized.

I'm working on it so will try the second of mole grips. If this doesn't work then it is down to removing the dash. :(

:) Hi and thanks for the help. Soem minor movement hopefully it will free completely. One pushing on the internal mechanism, and two wiggling the bits the wipers connect to. Beauty of such cars.

Now the second question is 'hunting' at about 12-1500 rpm the engine hunts/surges. I have checked US forums and this appears to be a fueeling problem from the meter unit. My car has done almost 100,000 miles and it is around this mileage that it occurs. replcament of the fuel metering unit apparently has cured this.

Any sugegstions?

kindest regards

Are you sure that a vacuum hose is not split

Vacum hose

Have checked all vacum hoses no splits or perished connectors. possibly metering unit it seems quite common in America I ahve picked this up on the US forums around the 100,000 miles. I will check again but it definitely seem to mis-fire/hunt around the 1200 - 1500 rpm
