I have a 1987 420 SL with 'rear seats' - I think I have seen them referred to as 'kinder seats'. I am planning on using them for the latter as of January, with the scheduled arrival of our 1st child.

I'll get to the point... can anyone advise re.

3 point seat belts in the back of a 107 (it currently has lap belts) - can 3P be fitted ?

ML at Silver Arrows once made ref. to child seats for the 107 - does anyone know anything of these ?

Cheers & thanks in advance,

DWB!

I have additional shoulder straps that simply loop over the lapstrap, making a 4-point arrangement. These clip into eye-bolts in the floor of the soft-top well. Are you wanting 3-point inertia-reel belts? I imagine it could be done, but would require some butchery to the car. These folk may be able to advise...

The German for children is Kinder, which would explain the reference to child seats. :)

This is new territory for me, but I am guessing the 3-point inertia-reel belts will be what's needed in terms of what baby seats on the market require.

I'm not too sure if you know the form baby seat wise but if you do would your 4 point system work?

Cheers for your reply, I will follow the link and let you know where I get to...

All the best,

DWB!

Yes, I've current experience with baby seats - my grandchildren's. At present one has rear-facing and the other has forward facing, both of which rely on inertia-reel 3 point.

When my children were small, child seats were fitted with their own 4-point fixings, from which the seats unclipped for removal - Britax, I seem to remember. They would have been ideal for a 107!

I think your best course is to speak to the folk whose link I gave. Their advert in Mercedes Enthusiast suggests they have lots of direct experience with SLs, so they are likely to know what options you have with modern seats (and regulations).

Good luck.

PS. Wish I could have afforded a 107 when my kids were that small - but of course they were the current SL at that time :)

Baby Seats + '87 107

Update:

I visited www.quickfitsbs.co.uk on Saturday and found them very helpful.

This is the situation:

Good new: it can be done.
Bad News: Until your child can use a front facing seat, the child must go in the front.

The only adaptation that would be needed at Stage 1 is to extend the passenger seat belt. £ 85 inc Gordon Brown's cut.

So basically for the next approx 6mths, it will be a bit of a pain to use the car for 3 (child & 2 adults), but there after it is a very simple adaptation to the rear seat (to fix an additional anchor point; you need a three point belt) to take standard child seat. I'll post the cost up for ref. nearer the time.

Thanks again,
DWB!

slc - r107 and child seat belts.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
I am just about to purchase a 450slc and have the same problem.
My child is just about ready to sit in a forward facing seat and are curious to know which type of seat you are using as I soon have to purchase one?
I will also speak to the people in the link.

with an slc you have a bit more space in the back, so you will have more scope/choice on seats... and you'd be suprised how many newish seats are OK with lapbelts.

I am due to go back to www.quickfitsbs.co.uk as we could get our daughter in the front in a rear facing seat, but I cant get our maxi cosi in the back, as its too big.

Apparently there are small childrens seats that fit 911's so I'm gonna look at those. To fit a 3 point belt in the back will cost approx £170.

All this taken into account and it sounds a pain BUT add in the fact I will have paid for my SL within 4 years of purchase SIMPLY in income tax savings against my company car, I have just put through its service & MOT with no problems at all, and it hasnt lost any value i would do the same thing again.

anyway i'll try and post feedback re. the back once i get round to doing it, at the moment my sl is for cigars & the a-class for all of us.

mind that porsche kiddy seat

It'll keep trying to overtake you on the bends. My 12 year old niece, quite petite for her age, has just given up trying to get in the back of my 500. I'll have to let her go in the front now. Never mind the saving, just think about how much more involving an SL is to drive and own than a company-mobile. It's worth any extra cost for the smile it puts on your face.

I have just been given, by said niece, the workshop manual for the fuel injection system. It's in german, sadly, but with a dictionary and some patience, I should be able to work through it. If anything stumps you , just post up and let me know.

just as well....

I used to teach it for a living. At least I know about foot/hand/parking brakes and all their myriad pitfalls. I remember when it took my missus and me to get our Alfa off my mate's drive, as the handbrake and the gears woudn't hold it, so I had to reach across and work the brake pedal while she did the clutch and gas. Like a Benny Hill sketch.
