124 parking brake cable

Help!! the parking brake has failed on my 96 E220 COUPE. Fault shows as loose release lever on lower driver-side dash. The foot pedal appears to operate the parking brakes when depressed but fails to engage the ratchet. From this I deduce that  perhaps the parking brake  release cable mechanism/ ratchet under the dash has failed rather than the operating cables further back.  How easy is this cable assembly to inspect/replace. Any suggestions/tips as to what component is likely to have  failed and how repair/ access this welcome. thanks

Hi Graeme

Sounds like the hand brake bracket is at fault. Its a fiddly job, may better to get a specialist to sort it. Somewhere in the region of 1-1.5hrs work of the top of my head.
