124 300D 1991 Steering wheel removal

I have bought a Mercedes wood trim Steering wheel complete with boss
to fit to my 300D 124 .It has standard wheel no airbag fitted.
Do I need any special tools to remove and fit ,as I do not have a workshop
manual.:-?

Remove the air bag by removing the 2 28mm torx screws ( I think that they are torx even on a 124, if not hex key)
lift the air bag out and unplug it,,do not turn on ignition with it unplugged,, then remove the center bolt 10mm I think,,this will be tight and an impact tool is much better, lift off wheel and fit new one,, do make sure that the wheels are straight ahead.

Its a 10mm allen key, with loctite and loads of torque, a son of a batchelor to remove.
You will need a strong assistant to hold the wheel while you undo the bolt with a good quality socket set type 10mm key and a long bar, the wheel may also be a wee shade tight on the column so some swearing may be called for as you pull and tug at it to get it loose.
To access the bolt on the original wheel pry the star out of the steering wheel centre (non airbag model) its about 100mm down the hole.

Tips:-

Leave the slackened bolt in place whilst you pull the wheel, it will prevent it hitting your face.

Disengage the steering lock whilst you dismantle it or damage may occur to the column.

Lock the steering only after its all loosened and fit the fresh wheel with it locked (it will help get the wheel straight ahead).

Release the lock before you apply any substatial torque to the securing bolt (assistance required again).

I love the hitting in the teeth bit :D so true though,Electric impact tools would not remove mine but the tyre wheel impact took it off in a sec,,could be worth driving down to your local garage and undo it there
